Visit These Favourite Lagos Markets To Buy Cheap Food Items (photos)

As the economic constraint caused be the federal government’s removal of petrol subsidy bites harder, with Nigeria currently ranking 109th out of the Global Hunger Index (GHI), one of the toughest challenges of middle-class Lagosians is locating where to buy food items at prices they can afford.

While the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government is doing its bit by subsidising prices of food stuff for Lagosians at designated markets across LGAs in Lagos state through its intervention program termed “Ounje Eko”, its is an unarguable fact that the effort is only scratching the surface of the problem.

However, there are certain spots in the state where food items can still be purchased at somewhat fair prices which Ikeja Record has brought to the fore in this article.

Agbara Market

Majorly open every four days, Agbara Market is a food hub where traders bring their items mostly from farms and bushes, a fact which impacts on prices. Here, you will find vegetables, grains, leaves, meat, fish and other food items at affordable prices.

But it must be said that affordability and availability of the items are linked to specific days. Since the market is run every four days, buyers may not get food stuff as cheap as they want if they visit the place outside the designated days.

Ikoga Market

Located in the Muwo axis of Badagry local government area in the state, Ikoga, and quite a lot like Agbara, Ikoga is a bush market. This means fresh-from-farm food items are often available here at good prices.

However, the fact that many buyers flock to the market because they are certain of getting good bargains may be a big disadvantage for other as the crowd is often massive almost always. Consequently, getting items from a particular stand may require some queuing. Thus, you will need to be patient or leave home early enough to be at the head of the waiting lines.

Ile-Epo market

Popular and situated along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway around Abule-Egba, Ile-Epo market is under Alimosho local government and Lagos residents living on the Mainland visit this market to purchase food commodities at low prices.

If you are looking for varieties of grains, tubers, vegetables, fruits, and oils, including frozen foods in bulk, come here. Another interesting thing about this market is that it is situated in a residential area, so persons living in Abule-Egba, Agege, Iyana-Ipaja, Alimosho, and their environs can access it in a matter of minutes.

Mile 12 market

Quite as famous as its location, Mile 12 market is another popular foodstuff epicentre for Lagosians on the Mainland. The Mile 12 market is found in the Ketu axis of Lagos along Ikorodu Road under Kosofe local government. Here, you will find almost all food commodities ranging from grains, fruits, pepper, onions, tomatoes, to varieties of tubers.

Even more, beverages can also be bought in Mile 12 Market in large quantities at low prices. Residents living in Ojota, Ketu, Ilupeju, Ikorodu, Surulere, Oshodi often find their way to this spot.

Oyingbo Market

Another popular food market that has been helpful to Lagos residents living in Surulere, Yaba, and Ebute Metta is Oyingbo Market. As one of the oldest, the market is a meeting point for residents from the Island and Mainland. Also, people from Isale Eko come here to get tubers, grains, vegetables, fish, and all kinds of seafood, and meats. The place is for large and small quantity buyers.

Iddo Market

Existing before the discovery of oil when farm produce was transported from the north into Lagos by rail, Idoo Market is located near the Nigerian Railways Terminus on Lagos Island.

The commercial hub serves intending buyers looking for rice, onion, yam, beans, and much more at wholesale prices. Aside from buying grains at bulk prices, livestock can also be purchased here. Lagosians residing in Bariga, Ijora, Makoko and Ebute Meta purchase farm produce in Iddo market.

Sura Market

Lagos Islanders who go for cheap food items can testify to what they get at Sura Market. This is also true for those in Adeniji Adele, Tinubu, some parts of Ikoyi, and Obalende as they purchase grains, fruits, meat and fish, vegetables and other food commodities in this spot.
