Discover seven alternative Lagos beaches to Landmark, Oniru, others

The recent demolition and sand filling of iconic Lagos beaches such as Landmark and Oniru – due to the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway – has been worrying for many Lagosians.

Other popular beaches such as the Good Beach and Sol by Mal Beach are also reportedly set to be demolished to make way for the highway.

However, despite these alterations to the landscape of Lagos’ coastal attractions, the state still boasts a plethora of breathtaking beaches waiting to be explored. At Ikeja Record, we have compiled a list of viable alternatives for you.

Tarkwa Bay

Tarkwa Bay stands out for its affordability, with an entrance fee of N500 and hut rentals ranging from N1500 to N5000.

Accessed only by boat, it offers a uniquely secluded experience, making it less crowded than other beaches in Lagos. Various jetty terminals across Lagos provide access to Tarkwa Bay.

Activities at Tarkwa Bay beach include horse riding, surfing, overnight camping, beach volleyball, beach motorbike rides, and sightseeing around the community.

Lekki Leisure Lake

Located at Adekunle Animashaun Drive, Lekki Leisure Lake offers a unique waterfront experience.

With activities such as horse riding, quad biking, and beach camping, this beach caters to adventure seekers. Admission costs N2000 for adults and N1500 per child. After a day filled with action, visitors can unwind at the beach side cabanas or relax on benches close to the sea. However, meals packed from home are not allowed on this beach; you can always order your meals from their restaurants.

Elegushi Beach

Situated in Lekki and owned by the Elegushi royal family, Elegushi Beach is a private beach destination.

Admission is priced at N2000 for adults and N1000 for children, with group discounts available. The beach features various restaurants and bars serving a range of Naija delicacies.

Additionally, there are different beach clubs and houses within the vicinity. For instance, Wave Beach House offers lodging options, themed park attractions, and a restaurant, all within the beach premises.

Suntan Beach

Suntan Beach, also known as Badagry Beach or Coconut Beach, is located at Km 67, Seme Border Expressway, Badagry, Lagos.

True to its name, the beach is lined with coconut trees, where visitors can purchase fresh coconuts to enjoy. The entrance fee ranges from N500 to N1000, making it quite affordable.

Additionally, there is a fee for shelter, typically in the form of a hut, which costs between N2000 and N3000. Visitors are allowed to bring their own meals or purchase food from the various restaurants, bars, and local food vendors on the beach. While the activities at this beach are somewhat limited, they include horse riding and swimming.

Alpha Beach

Situated in New Road, Alpha Beach, Lekki, the gate fee ranges between N1000 and N1500 for both adults and children.

A notable feature of this beach is a section demarcated with large stones and gravels extending into the sea. Visitors often enjoy strolling along this stone-made bridge to soak in the sea breeze, making it a popular spot for taking photographs.

For adventurous souls, horse rentals are available for beach exploration, while food enthusiasts can savour fresh seafood at the beachfront eateries. Additionally, visitors are welcome to bring their own meals for a seaside picnic with friends.

Eleko Beach

Established in 1989, Eleko Beach is one of the oldest and most beloved beaches in Lagos, located in Ibeju-Lekki.

With a gate fee of N500 for both adults and children, it remains one of the most affordable beach destinations in the city.

Visitors are permitted to bring their own food and drinks, or they can explore the culinary offerings at the beach’s restaurants and bars. Additionally, tents are available for rent, with prices reaching as high as N10,000.

Atican Beach

Atican Beach  is the epitome of relaxation and entertainment, situated at Abraham Adesanya Estate Road, Eti-Osa.

With a gate fee ranging from 500 to 1000 naira, it offers affordable access to its facilities.

Visitors have the option to bring their own food, albeit with a small fee, or they can explore the various bars and restaurants available on-site. Additionally, tents are available for shelter, with prices estimated accordingly.

Extra tip

As the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway reshapes Lagos’ coastline, embrace the chance to discover its hidden treasures and create enduring seaside memories.

For a more peaceful experience, consider visiting these beaches on weekdays to escape the weekend rush. Keep in mind that during special holidays or festive seasons such as Christmas, Eid, and other national holidays, the beaches are likely to be crowded more than usual.
