People first: LASG stands with workers’ demand for pay raise

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has expressed solidarity with Nigerian workers’ over the demand for an upward review of wages.

In his address to workers during the May Day celebration held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos Island, on Wednesday, May 1, Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that his administration would continue to prioritize the welfare and prosperity of the workforce in the state.

The governor stated: “There is no gainsaying that this year’s workers day is being celebrated amidst economic challenges which are as a result of the difficult but yet inevitable policies taken by the government to rescue the economy and set it on the path of sustainable growth.

“The economic downturn has brought about disruptions that have affected lives and livelihoods. Yet, in the face of these challenging trials, you have exhibited remarkable resilience, adaptability, and courage.

“You have been the backbone of our response efforts, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted and that our state stands strong.

“This year’s theme, ‘People First,’ resonates deeply with our administration’s philosophy which is underpinned by our firm belief in prioritizing the welfare of our people.

“Through, various measures, policies and initiatives, we have demonstrated that the interest and welfare of the people comes first and remains the ultimate goal of all our actions.

“Our response actions are geared towards mitigating the impact of these trying times and offer support to both our workers and citizens alike.

“We have been steadfast and intentional in implementing our social intervention programs, providing crucial assistance to those in need throughout the state.

“From subsidized food items through our Ounje Eko, and Eko Cares initiatives to incentives on social services, we have made tangible differences in countless lives.

“Healthcare initiatives that ensure access to quality medical services for all, transportation support, and educational opportunities for our children exemplify our commitment to creating a Lagos where everyone has a fair chance to thrive.↳

“Our dedication to putting people first extends beyond mere words. We stand by our labour unions and organizations advocating for workers’ rights and welfare.

“Together, we have achieved significant milestones in improving working conditions and ensuring fair wages and benefits, understanding that a thriving workforce is pivotal to our state’s prosperity.

“I want to encourage us to understand the importance of standing together in solidarity and supporting one another through these difficult times.

“Our social intervention programmes exemplify this spirit of unity and compassion, offering lifelines to those facing hardship and adversity.↳

“As a government, we recognize the fundamental principles of fairness, equality and justice in the workplace.

“Every individual, regardless of their gender or background, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

“We will continue to uphold these principles and strive to create environments where all workers feel valued, empowered and safe.

“As we look towards the future, I want to reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society in which the interest of workers receives the attention it deserves.
