Lagos State University (LASU) has terminated the appointment of Prof. Tajudeen Olumoko’s as Dean of Student Affairs, following allegations of extortion and certificate racketeering.
The allegations, reported by a news outlet, uncovered a fraudulent scheme that offered Lagos State University degrees to individuals for a fee of N2 million to N3 million, with prices varying depending on the academic program.
The management of the institution, in a statement signed by spokesperson Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile on Tuesday, said “its own inquiries into the allegations will be concluded before the end of 2023.”
“Consistently with applicable law, the outcome of the inquiry will be published, and appropriate action will be taken,” he added.
A source within the university’s administration, however, confirmed to PUNCH, a Nigerian daily newspaper, on Wednesday morning that the Dean had been removed and that Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science, had been appointed as the Acting DSA.
Earlier this week, Ikeja Record had also reported that the Lagos State House of Assembly summoned Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Akibu, the Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Senate of the tertiary institution and other top staff, over the allegations in question.
“I agree that the committee should invite those to be invited to establish facts about the allegation, but we must not because of that destroy our institution’s reputation,” Speaker Mudashiru Obasa,who is also an alumnus of the institution, said on Monday’s plenary.
