Flooding: List Of Vulnerable Areas in Lagos To Watch Out For

After weeks and even months of intense heat in parts of Nigeria, especially Lagos, the rainy season seems to be back following the heavy downpour witnessed across the state on Sunday, April 21.

For some, this means goodbye to sweat, heat and the discomfort that comes with them; however, another section of residents in the state saw the Sunday rain as the coming of pain, danger and immeasurable losses associated with flooding.

While the Governor Sanwo-Olu-led administration, through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, is doing its utmost to fix the network of drainage in local government areas, the rain will not wait, and as such, disaster is lurking.

Below is a list of areas in Lagos that are most hit with flooding during the season:

  1. Alagbole
  2. Meiran
  3. Maidan
  4. Kara
  5. Isheri-Olowora
  6. Agiliti
  7. Owode-Onirin
  8. Owode-Elede
  9. Agboyi I
  10. Agboyi II
  11. Ajegunle
  12. Itowolo
  13. Majidun
  14. Ibeshe
  15. Baiyeku
  16. Maidan
  17. Lekki-Ajah
  18. Lagos Lagoon boundaries

Recall that in early April, the state government announced the start of construction on the nearly 5-kilometre System 44 drainage channel along Mobil Road, Ogombo, and Ikota, aimed at controlling flooding in the Lekki axis as the rainy season approaches.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, announced a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, April 5.

Wahab highlighted that the construction of the drainage channel demonstrates the Lagos State government’s readiness and commitment to addressing the flooding issues affecting communities across the state.

The post read:

“To ensure a free flow of rainwater, Lagos State Government @followlasg has commenced the construction of System 44 (Mobil road – Ogombo – Ikota) drainage channel.

“This highlights the state government’s readiness and commitment to solving the flooding issues across the communities in the state.”
