APC chieftain Chief Obidike Chukwuebuka has expressed confidence in Seyi Tinubu’s ability to transform Lagos into a world-class city, saying critics will witness his success. His remarks follow Seyi Tinubu’s endorsement by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders for the 2027 Lagos governorship race, Vanguard Newspaper reported. “He is capable and will drive progress in infrastructure, economic growth, and social welfare,” Obidike said.

NRC restores 2PM train between Iddo and Ijoko

The Nigerian Railway Corporation will restart the 2 PM Mass Transit Train Service between Iddo and Ijoko. NRC MD Dr. Kayode Opeifa promised better services, coach upgrades, and improved station lighting, warning contractors against poor performance, the Nation Newspaper reported. 

Border community in darkness since 2017 – Report

Residents of Kweme, a Lagos border community in Badagry, have endured power outages since 2017, forcing many to travel to Benin Republic just to charge phones and fetch water. “We have stable power, and Nigerians rely on us for electricity,” a Beninese trader told Sunday PUNCH Newspaper. Meanwhile, Nigeria supplies 24-hour electricity to Benin and Togo while communities like Kweme remain in darkness.

Lagos to install 150 public toilets

The Lagos State Government plans to install 150 public toilets to combat open defecation and improve sanitation, following concerns raised by NYSC member Ushie Uguamaye’s “Lagos is smelling” slogan. Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab dismissed claims of persistent odors, highlighting ongoing waste management efforts, including better waste disposal systems and public awareness campaigns, the Guild Newspaper reported. He also warned that violators of environmental laws, especially illegal waste dumpers, will face prosecution.

Thirty indigent patients to receive free open heart surgeries

The Commissioner for Health Prof. Akin Abayomi has announced that the Lagos State Government will sponsor free open-heart surgeries for 30 indigent patients. The initiative, backed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aims to reduce medical tourism and improve local healthcare. The surgeries, which cost N8.5 million per patient, will be conducted in three phases—April, August, and December. “Many people simply cannot afford this, and I have seen firsthand how patients struggle due to financial constraints,” head of the Cardio-Thoracic Division at LASUTH, Prof. Bode Falase said. LASUTH’s Chief Medical Director Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo confirmed that only indigent patients will qualify, with selection starting next month, the Punch Newspaper reported.

Axxela partners with Lagos to boost energy reliability

Axxela Limited is partnering with the Lagos State Government to enhance energy reliability and expand gas infrastructure. During a visit to the Governor, the company reaffirmed its commitment to bridging the state’s energy gap. Through its subsidiary, Gaslink Nigeria Limited, Axxela has developed over 170km of gas pipelines across key industrial areas, Nairametrics reported. “Our AGI facility in Ikeja and expansion along the VI-Lekki corridor reflect our commitment to sustainable energy solutions that empower industries and reduce carbon emission,” Managing Director Kehinde Alabi said. 

Lagos scraps mass promotions in secondary schools

The Lagos State government has scrapped mass promotions for students moving to terminal classes, citing poor WASSCE results. Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Tolani Alli-Balogun said the practice “has not improved academic performance” and urged principals to promote only high-achieving students, The Guild Newspaper reported. He also called for the revival of extracurricular activities to enhance learning.

E-hailing union demands stricter driver checks after stabbing incident

The Lagos State Council of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has urged stricter background checks after a driver stabbed and robbed one Pascaline Akusionwu in Sangotedo. The union, which maintains a driver database, also called for collaboration between app companies and regulators to improve safety, the Punch Newspaper reported. 

UK signs MoU with Lagos for International Financial Centre

The Lagos State Government has signed an MoU with EnterpriseNGR, The City UK, and the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office to develop an International Financial Centre in Lagos. “This marks the beginning of a new engagement to establish Lagos as the first sub-Saharan city with an international financial centre,” Sanwo-Olu said. LIFC Co-Chair Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede praised the initiative, saying it would put Lagos and Nigeria on the world financial map, the Punch Newspaper reported.

Lagos Gallery Weekend returns with 20 galleries, cultural institutions

Lagos Gallery Weekend (LGW) is returning for its second edition from March 28 to 30, 2025, with 20 galleries and five cultural institutions showcasing Lagos’ vibrant art scene through exhibitions, live performances, and painting sessions for children.“This is an opportunity to amplify our art spaces and showcase what they have to offer,” the LGW Director Sunshine Alaibe said.
