Lagos is not smelly, it’s evolving. Tokunbo Wahab

The commissioner for environment and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has addressed the sanitation complaints that have rocked the state in recent weeks. He said Lagos is evolving rather than smelling. Wahab stressed the state government’s commitment to  environmental sustainability, including initiatives in waste processing, landfill management, and sanitation systems. He also said solving waste and sanitation issues in the state is a collective responsibility and not just for the government. “We must collectively focus on our different responsibilities; government and the governed,” the commissioner said.

McGregor channel clean up begins

Meanwhile, days after Ikeja Record highlighted the pitiable state of the McGregor channel, the state government has kickstarted a clean-up. “Keeping our drainage channels clear is crucial as we prepare for the rainy season,” commissioner Wahab said.

GRV criticizes Wahab’s “Cleaner Lagos” post

Labour Party’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has criticized the state government’s waste management strategies and called for immediate action to prevent a public health crisis. “Beyond the simplistic approach of uploading videos of citizens dumping refuse, improving the environment in Lagos requires deep thinking, well thought out policies and collective action,” Rhodes-Vivour said.

Oshodi Transport Interchange to be redesigned for rail integration

The Ministry of Transportation has revealed plans to redesign the Oshodi transport interchange for a better integration with the Red and Blue line rail systems. The design plans are still at the early stages of site visitation, the ministry said in a statement. It called for all relevant stakeholders to “submit any identified grey areas that require improvement.”

Fire service prevents two potential disasters

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it prevented two potential disasters over the weekend. The service responded to a gas truck accident in Epe and a tanker incident on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, according to a statement on its X page.

Sanwo-Olu inaugurates HOPE programme committees

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has launched the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE), an initiative aimed at improving human capital development in the state. The initiative, supported by the World Bank, seeks to expand access to quality health, education, social services, and better livelihood opportunities. 

Taskforce impounds 108 mini commercial vehicles for illegal parking

The state’s Task Force has impounded 108 commercial vehicles including tricycles, korope mini-buses, for illegally parking at restricted places. According to Vanguard Newspaper, enforcement operations took place around Jakande Gate along Ikotun-Isolo road, Command road, Omi Ata, and Ekoro road in Abule Egba. Task Force Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, who led the operation said the operation was prompted by numerous complaints about road obstructions, illegal parking on kerbs and walkways, and traffic bottlenecks, particularly in the Alimosho axis.

LAWMA intensifies clean-up and enforcement operations

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified enforcement and clean-up operations across the state to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal and promote environmental sustainability. LAWMA’s Director and CEO, Mr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted the agency’s commitment to keep Lagos clean noting that monitoring and enforcement teams have been mobilised to ensure compliance with the state’s waste management laws, Voice of Nigeria reported.

Glo Foundation distributes food in Bariga

Glo Foundation, in partnership with Lagos Food Bank, distributed food to thousands of residents in the Ilaje community in Bariga, Daily Champion Newspaper reported. Speaking at the event, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Jumobi Mofe-Damijo, said the initiative is part of the Foundation’s commitment to empower families and also cater for the underprivileged. Meanwhile, LASEPA trained 20 women on the use of smokeless kilns for fish smoking in Ago-Egun, Bariga.

Rack Centre to Launch $120M AI-Ready Data Hub in April

Rack Centre, a carrier-neutral data centre operator, is set to commission a $120 million 12-megawatt data hub in Lagos on April 10, marking a significant expansion in West Africa’s digital infrastructure. The facility will add 3,240 square meters of white space, six data halls, and four Meet-Me-Rooms to enhance connectivity for international, regional, and local network providers, Punch Newspaper reported.
