Water transport traffic falls by 130% in Lagos

Water transportation in Lagos State has experienced a significant decline in patronage, dropping by 130% year-on-year from 16.7 million in 2023, to 7.25 million passengers in 2024. This is according to Vanguard Newspaper’s analysis of data from the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).

Electricity law set to end power outages

The recently passed Lagos Electricity Law will end blackouts across Lagos state, the Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said. “Some of the hurdles have been with us since 20, 30 years ago,” he said. “So, in resolving them, the first thing we need to do is to get all the stakeholders to understand the best route to resolving them.”

Lagos set to airlift 2024 pilgrims

The Lagos State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board has announced that the second batch of pilgrims for 2024 will depart for the Holy Lands of Israel and Jordan on February 7. The first batch of 2024 pilgrims had embarked on the pilgrimage exercise from December 22, 2024, and returned on January 1, 2025, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

Lagos pegs Hajj fee at 8.78 million

Meanwhile, the Lagos state Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has announced a fee of N8,784,085.59 for muslims intending to participate in the 2025 Hajj from the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has encouraged African ancestry delegates to consider Lagos their home during their visit to Nigeria. Speaking to the 14-member delegation led by Honorable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, he highlighted Lagos’ welcoming spirit and its role as a hub for cultural and economic opportunities, urging the delegates to forge stronger ties with the state.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirms bilateral relationship with Rwanda

Meanwhile, the Governor has reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening bilateral relationship with Rwanda to promote economic development and deepen collaborative opportunities. According to Peoples Gazatte, Governor Sanwo-Olu made this affirmation during a courtesy visit by the High Commissioner of Rwanda to Nigeria, Amb. Christopher Bazivamo, on Wednesday.

Explicit videos involving minors attracts 14 years

The Lagos state government has announced that sharing, forwarding or publishing of explicit videos involving minors on social media attracts a 14-year-jail term. The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, revealed this during a one-day workshop for headteachers, teachers, social workers, and school counsellors in Lagos, the Guardian Newspaper reported.

Navy intercepts eight suspected stowaways off Lagos coast

The Nigerian Navy has detained eight suspects for attempting to stow away at the MSC Katyani vessel in an attempt to illegally migrate to Europe on Friday. The suspects have been handed to the Deputy Superintendent of Immigration at the port, Dalhatu Musa.

Hit and run driver apprehended in Lagos

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has arrested a hit-and-run driver, Dauda Bello. According to the unit, the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court in accordance with the law of the state.

Ex-convict arrested for kidnapping in Lagos

The Lagos State Police command has arrested one Kingsley Wanogho, an ex-convict who also paraded himself as an officer of the Nigerian Army for kidnapping, and phone snatching in Ikeja. The arrest was contained in a statement on Wednesday by the Rapid Response Squad of the command, Punch Newspaper reported.
