Legislative profile: Abiodun Orekoya

 


Abiodun Orekoya, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), represents Somolu 1 constituency in the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly.

He was first elected in 2023.

Mr. Orekoya is the House committee chairman on youth, sports and social development.

He is a trained engineer.

Early life and education

Born on December 24, 1965, Mr. Orekoya attended Lagos City Council (LCC) Primary School, where he obtained his first school leaving certificate before completing his secondary education from Fadeyi and Apostolic Church Grammar School in Ketu. 

He then pursued a Higher National Diploma (HND) in electrical electronics engineering at Yaba College of Technology. 

In 1983, he served as a member of the 43 engineer brigade of the Nigerian Army in Jos. In 1990, he worked in the engineering department of the Guardian newspaper. 

By 1991, he had joined Ideal concepts, a computer engineering consulting firm, and between 1994 and 1996, he served as general manager of the company. 

In 1997, he established his own computer engineering and consulting firm.

Political career

Mr. Orekoya served as the executive vice chairman of Somolu Local Government from 2008 to 2015.

He became the executive secretary of the same local government in 2015. 

Between 2020 and 2022, he held the position of Commissioner 1 in the Local Government Service Commission of Lagos State.

In 2023, he contested the House seat for Somolu Constituency 1. He secured 14,256, defeating his closest opponent, Adelana Adesegun-Adewale of the Labour Party. Adesegun-Adewale received only 4,865 votes.

Legislative work

Mr. Orekoya has been credited with sponsoring the vaccination of 150 individuals against hepatitis B in his constituency.

He also reportedly covered the surgical costs for two constituents who were suffering from hernia and breast cancer, respectively. 

He is also said to have funded the treatment of others for various ailments, including glaucoma and broken legs.

Other of his achievements include co-sponsoring the motion for the adoption of the existing rules and standing orders of the House.

He also contributed, during a parliamentary session, to the support of the creation of state police and the enhancement of security for lives and property, as proposed by the House’s speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Mr. Orekoya was credited with the distribution of 100 free GCE forms and coverage of registration costs for all 100 beneficiaries. 

Additionally, he is said to have overseen the rehabilitation of Oguntolu Street and Awosevin Street, a project carried out by the Lagos State Public Works Initiative.
