Sanwo-Olu to host Southwest governors for regional talks

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will host his Southwest counterparts today at Lagos House, Ikeja, for a meeting on key regional issues, including agriculture, food security, economic collaboration, and security. Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso said the discussions would advance economic growth and regional development, the Nation reported. This follows a June 2024 meeting where Sanwo-Olu was appointed chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum.

Fashola, industry experts advocate monthly rent payments

Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and real estate stakeholders have called for a monthly rent payment system in Nigeria. Speaking at the Wemabod Real Estate Outlook 2025 in Lagos, Fashola argued that aligning rent with salary payments could help stabilize inflation, Punch reported. “If rents can be paid monthly when salaries are gotten, you would see a (positive) change in the economy,” he said. Industry experts also backed the proposal, emphasizing the role of employers in guaranteeing rent deductions to ease landlord concerns.

Rhodes-Vivour questions sandfilling in Makoko, demands resettlement plan

Former Labour Party governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has criticized the ongoing sandfilling in Makoko, questioning the government’s plans for the community’s residents. In a post on X, he raised concerns about the eviction of a 200-year-old settlement despite court orders, asking what alternatives and support systems exist for those losing their homes and livelihoods. “Why isn’t there a transition plan to provide a safety net for the helpless indigenous people that would now be discarded without thought or care?,” he wrote. Meanwhile, Vanguard reported Rhodes-Vivour warning that the sandfilling could trigger severe flooding in the area.

State targets 8,500 MW to meet 12,000 MW electricity supply

The state government has said it aims to increase power supply by 8,500 megawatts adding to the existing 3,500 megawatts to reach a total of 12,00 MW for industrial growth. The State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperative, Trade and Investment, Mrs Folashade Ambrose, revealed this during the Lagos State Industrial Policy Consultative Assembly and Validation Workshop in Ikeja.

Assembly urges government to construct more public toilets

The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged the state government and relevant authorities to build more public toilets. This is due to the increased rate of open defecation across the state, Vanguard Newspaper reported.

Itu-Mara shanties, illegal structures risk demolition

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has marked shanties and illegal structures in Itu-Mara in Mainland Local Government Area for demolition. The agency’s general manager, Mr Gbolahan Oki, revealed this on Wednesday, News Agency of Nigeria reported. Meanwhile, residents of the area have begun to protest, urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to revoke the order.

Truck drivers gets trained to reduce highway accidents

With the aim to reduce truck accidents on highways and curb substance abuse among truck drivers, the state government has reaffirmed its commitment to train 10,000 maritime highway truck drivers and motor-boys. Representing the Special Adviser at the sensitization programme organized by Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and the Lagos State Truck and Cargo Committee (LASTCOC), Adekoya Hassan stated that the programme will focus on curbing substance abuse among truck drivers.

NAFDAC shuts drug markets in Idumota

The ​​National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) has shut drug markets in Idumota, in a bid to tackle nationwide distribution of fake medicines. The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Christianah Adeyeye said that the essence of the operation curb sale of fake drugs to citizens. “The essence of the operation is to ensure that when we take medicines, they work,” she said. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, has shut public toilets in Katangua market for pouring untreated wastewater and sewage into public drains. According to a facebook post by the Lagos State Government revealed that the toilets were shut down by the Enforcement and Compliance officers of the agency after investigations were made.

Market square opens in Lekki and Gbagada

Market Square, a grocery retail chain store, has opened two stores located at Purple Lekki in Lekki and Eterna Filling Station, Gbagada Junction, Apapa Oshodi Expressway. The Head of Marketing at Market Square, Emmanuel Isangediok, said that the move is in line with the company’s mission to strengthen customer convenience and affordability, Punch Newspaper reported.
