BRT fares set to increase by 18%
Starting from February 17, 2025, there will be an 18% increase in BRT fares. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) shared this update on their X account. The fare adjustment was deemed necessary due to rising operational costs and to maintain the availability of bus services for commuters in Lagos.
LSWA announces €410 million investment in Omi Eko water transport project
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has announced that the “Omi Eko” project, a water transport initiative, will require an investment of €410 million. Set to begin this year and run until 2030, the project will include the implementation of a smart ticketing system, improvements in dredging and navigation on 15 ferry routes, the deployment of over 78 electric ferries, and the construction of 25 ferry terminals, Nairamerics reported.
LWC partners with WaterAid to rehabilitate Akilo waterworks
Lagos Water Corporation has partnered with WaterAid Nigeria and Armani Beauty for the rehabilitation of one of the 18 micro waterworks, the Akilo Waterworks which was constructed in 2012 and located in Ifako. However, the facility has been non-functional in recent times. The Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Muktaar Tijani, mentioned in a statement that once the rehabilitation is completed, residents would need to pay to access the water, Guardian reported. He explained that this payment system is necessary to ensure the sustainability and long-term functionality of the facility.
Sanwo-Olu to commission newly upgraded roads in Eti-Osa
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is set to commission new roads today, February 14. The new roads include a reconstructed and upgraded alternative route to Admiralty Circle Plaza, Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru Road, Akiogun Road, and Abudu Smith Street in Eti-Osa. This development is expected to improve traffic flow, positively impacting businesses and residents in the area.
Southwest Governors meet to discuss key economic issues
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, and Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State on Thursday attended the South-West Governors’ Forum hosted by Sanwo-Olu in Ikeja to discuss core economic issues. Business day reported that the forum commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in stabilizing the economy, including the sustained supply of petroleum and exchange rate stabilization. They also supported the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, praised the establishment of the South West Development Commission (SWDC) headquarters in Ibadan, and resolved to tackle rising food prices through monitoring teams and food hubs. Additionally, the Southwest governors recognized the DAWN Commission’s progress and encouraged continued collaboration for regional development.
Wemabod Limited to develop luxury residential and commercial projects in Ikeja, Ikoyi
Wemabod Limited is collaborating with El Salem Nigeria Limited and Trans Fortress Global Resources to develop d a dynamic commercial hub in Ikeja and a luxury residential project in Ikoyi. The residential project, located at 18C Lugard Avenue, Ikoyi, will offer luxurious amenities to its residents. Meanwhile, the commercial project at Awolowo House, Ikeja, aims to transform the area into a modern and efficient commercial hub, Punch reported.
CHSER defends Meranda’s appointment
The Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSER) has advocated for the democratic rights of Speaker Mojisola Meranda and condemned attempts to reinstate Obasa, stating that Meranda’s appointment was a lawful and procedural selection. The organization emphasized that “the speaker chosen by the majority of members must be allowed to preside over the business of the house without intimidation or harassment,” the Nation online reported.
Lawmakers urge Sanwo-Olu to prioritize completion of abandoned road projects
Lawmakers have urged the State Governor to prioritize the completion of abandoned road projects, particularly the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road in Igbogbo Bayeku, Ikorodu, which has become vulnerable to robberies. Deputy Majority Leader, Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, noted that the issue extends beyond Ikorodu, urging the summoning of relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to address the abandoned roads. In response, Speaker Meranda directed lawmakers to compile lists of such roads in their constituencies for submission to the appropriate ministry, the Nation reported.
LSSC gives training stakeholders in model colleges
The Lagos State Safety Commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students in Lagos State Model Colleges by conducting training for house managers, food vendors, and other key stakeholders. The Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, represented by the Technical Adviser, Mr. Seun Awojobi urged participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge to their schools, PM News reported. “You are the eyes and ears of the school, and we rely on you to help us identify potential safety risks and prevent accidents,” Awojobi said.
Muslim charity to conduct free medical screening
Faith Unites Muslims Charity Initiative, a Muslim charity organisation, will be conducting a medical screening on February 23. According to one of the members, Amir Subair, the screening will focus on hypertension, diabetes, and malaria, with free medication provided to participants. This initiative aims to support the health and well-being of the Muslim community in Lagos, Nation Online reported.
