Legislative profile: Ege Olusegun Adebisi

Ege Olusegun Adebisi, a member of the All Progressives (APC), represents Ojo 1 Constituency in the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly.

He was first elected to the House in 2023.

Mr. Adebisi also holds the position of chairman of the House committee on housing.

Early life and education

Mr. Adebisi was born in Lagos in 1984. Although there is sparse information on his early life, Adebisi appears to have spent the majority of his adult life dedicated to public service.

His professional career was built mainly in the Lagos state civil service where he worked in the office of the Head of Service of the Lagos State Government.

In 2021, Mr.Adebisi served as the Local Government Returning Officer for the election held on the 24th of July, 2021.

He resigned from his employment with the office of the Head of Service of Lagos State Government in 2022 to pursue a career in politics.

Political career

Mr. Adebisi’s political career officially began in 2022 when he picked up the nomination form to participate in the 2023 House elections.. He entered the electoral race to represent the Ojo I Constituency under the APC political party.

During the APC’s screening exercise for aspirants ahead of its primaries, a petition was filed challenging Adebisi’s eligibility.

According to the petition, the screening exercise revealed numerous discrepancies and irregularities regarding Adebisi’s eligibility.

The petition alleged that Ege Adebisi violated specific constitutional provisions of the party concerning the screening process. One of the concerns stated in the petition mentioned that in the nomination form submitted by Adebisi, his name read “Ege Adebisi Olusegun” whereas his birth certificate had “Ege Adebisi Oluse” as his name.

Adebisi was instructed to submit an affidavit and publish a notice in the national newspapers to address the issue before the deadline for document submission.

The petition also alleged that before the screening exercise, Adebisi had reportedly claimed to have resigned from his position in the civil service with the Lagos State Government. However, during the screening exercise, he stated that he was still employed in the Office of the Head of Service of Lagos State.

In an interview, Adebisi denied any wrongdoing and stated that he was awaiting the committee’s recommendation. According to Adebisi, he had been properly screened by the party’s screening committee and allowed to contest in the elections. “I have been duly cleared by the screening committee as an aspirant, and regarding the said petition let’s wait for the recommendation of the committee,” he said.

Adebisi contested in the 2023 election as the State Representative for Ojo I Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In July 2022, the Tinubu Support Group, Ojo Local Government chapter, pledged their total support for Mr. Adebisi and he later went on to win the election.

Legislative work

As a member of the House, Adebisi serves as  chairman of the House committee on Housing.

Adebisi is known for his strong advocacy for infrastructure development within his constituency.

Meanwhile, as a lawmaker, he has openly recognized the long-standing issues of inadequate public services in Ojo, and championed several projects aimed at rehabilitating roads, upgrading healthcare facilities, and enhancing educational institutions.

One of his significant contributions was his constituency’s participation in the  training of 200 artisans, an initiative designed to address the shortage of skilled workers in Lagos and stimulate local economic activity.

Mr. Adebisi has also been a vocal proponent of reforms that promote accountability in the management of public resources. In June 2024, he presented an account of his stewardship to his constituents, detailing the various projects and initiatives he had undertaken to improve the lives of the people within the local council in his first year in office.

According to Adebisi, his efforts in his first year reflect his campaign slogan, “The Game Changer,” a slogan which he believes encapsulates his mission to bring positive change to Ojo Constituency 1.

Adebisi has been involved in broader economic discussions within the Lagos State House of Assembly. In February 2024, Adebisi was a part of the Lagos state assembly members who called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to hold a stakeholder meeting involving representatives from both the national and state assemblies, as well as local government officials, to address the economic challenges faced by Lagosians.

He moved the motion under “matters of urgent public interest” calling on the officials to address the rising cost of living and find sustainable solutions.
