Lagos hints at possible tenancy law review

The Lagos State government may soon deliberate on tenancy laws and rent regulations. Reacting to Enugu State’s move to amend its Landlord and Tenant Law, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat tweeted, “LAGOS… Coming Soon. A very strong issue but must be well discussed and implemented after deliberation by the Lagos House of Assembly.” While no official announcement has been made, rising housing costs and rental conditions remain pressing issues for Lagos residents, fueling calls for reform.

Fires gut Ladipo, Owode Onirin markets

Midnight fires at Ladipo and Owode Onirin markets in Lagos destroyed goods worth millions. The Ladipo fire, which started at 1 am, razed shops filled with spare parts and appliances before firefighters contained it by 6 am. A separate blaze at Owode Onirin, affecting metal shops, was brought under control by 5am, Vanguard Newspaper reported. No casualties were reported, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fires.

LAMATA engages stakeholders on Purple Line Rail project

Officials from LAMATA met with local government leaders on Tuesday to discuss the Purple Line rail project. LAMATA said the sensitization was a prerequisite for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment before implementation. Local authorities, including Orile Agege LCDA Chairman Johnson Babatunde, Iba LCDA Chairman Yisa Abiola Jubril, and Alimosho LG Secretary Dare Ogunkoya, pledged their support, the Guardian Newspaper reported. The 57km rail line, connecting Redemption Camp to Volkswagen with 17 stations, aims to integrate seamlessly into Lagos’ existing transport network

LPG marketers warn of impending cooking gas shortage

Liquefied petroleum gas marketers have warned of an imminent cooking gas shortage due to levies imposed by the Lagos State Government on gas trucks, which have disrupted loading at Dangote Refinery since February 22. The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) said truck drivers are boycotting the refinery over the charges and urged authorities to intervene. They warned that the situation could reverse recent price reductions and lead to widespread scarcity, Vanguard Newspaper reported.

Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to be completed before end of Tinubu’s second term – Umahi

Minister of Works, David Umahi has assured that the 750km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be completed before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s second term. Speaking at the contract signing between the Federal Government and Hitech Construction, Umahi described the project as Africa’s biggest infrastructure development. The highway, initiated in March 2024, will be funded through a 30% government counterpart contribution and foreign investments, Punch Newspaper reported. The first 47.7km, starting from Ahmadu Bello Way in Lagos, is expected to be ready by May 2025.

Court remands three Lagos Assembly workers for assaulting DSS operatives

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of three Lagos State Assembly workers for allegedly assaulting SSS operatives and circulating false information on social media. The suspects, Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Adetu Adekunle, and Fatimoh Adetola, face six charges, including obstructing security officers and cyberstalking. The court deferred their arraignment to Wednesday, pending a review of the case file, Premium Times reported.

NUPENG, Lagos Govt in talks over towed tanker trucks

NUPENG is negotiating with the Lagos State Government to resolve the towing of tanker trucks and prevent fuel scarcity. The union had withdrawn services after security personnel arrested tanker drivers and impounded trucks near the Dangote Refinery, Punch Newspaper reported. General Secretary Olawale Afolabi assured that discussions are ongoing, with hopes of a resolution soon.

Sanwo-Olu declares Lagos as Africa’s next digital innovation hub

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated the state’s ambition to become Africa’s leading hub for digital gaming, fintech solutions, and AI-powered creative enterprises. Speaking at the 2nd Africa Gaming Expo (AGE) 2025, he highlighted Lagos’ commitment to fostering a digital economy that attracts global investment and drives local innovation, the Nation newspaper reported. Meanwhile, Sanwo-Olu also hosted the World Bank team on the IMPACT Project, which aims to accelerate immunization and malaria coverage in the state.

Wahab warns traders against displaying goods on drainage channels

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has urged traders to stop displaying goods on drainage channels, warning that enforcement will follow to ensure compliance. During an advocacy campaign in Oyingbo, Victoria Island, and other parts of Lagos, Wahab emphasized the dangers of obstructing drainages. “To prevent flooding, we are engaging traders one-on-one, urging them to stop blocking drainage channels,” he stated.

Lagos holds first strategic retreat for senior youth ministry officials in 15 years

The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development has launched a three-day Strategic Management Retreat for senior officials in Grade Levels 15 to 17, the first in 15 years. Commissioner Mobolaji Ogunlende described the retreat, themed “Engendering Gender Equity, Social Inclusion, and Youth Development in a Diverse Environment,” as a key step toward advancing the ministry’s mission. “After 15 years, we finally have the opportunity to come together, network, and take a well-deserved break,” he said. Held in Epe, the retreat follows a similar program for officials in Grade Levels 13 and 14 and includes team-building, leadership discussions, and strategic planning.
