Lagos on high alert over HMPV virus

The Director of Port Health Services, Dr Akpan Nse said Lagos is a top priority as the country raises its alertness over the Human Metapneumovirus. The virus, which has been spreading recently in China, is believed to be a known entity and not a major concern. “We have notified every point of entry in the country, which we have even done as early as this week,” Nse told Punch Newspaper. “And the number one is Lagos, people will come by sea, by air, and by land. So, the borders there have to be well monitored, because it could come from the nearest state or county. We have to work day and night to ensure that we screen the immigrants.”

Post-Master visits Sanwo-Olu

The head of the Nigerian Postal Service, Tola Odeyemi, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House Marina. According to a government spokesperson, the purpose of the visit was to seek the strategic support and collaboration of the Lagos State Government on different projects.

Shoprite abandons nylon bags

Shoprite stores across Lagos state have ended the use of nylon bags in compliance with the single-use-plastic ban. Instead, customers are offered the option of purchasing reusable shopping bags for N500 each or using shopping bags they bring from home, Nairametrics reported.

Lagos Television, others set for strike over salary delays

The staff of Lagos Television, Radio Lagos/Eko FM and Traffic radio have revealed plans to commence an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries. The strike, which is organized by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union (RATTAWU), is set to begin on January 13, and is expected to disrupt broadcasting services.

Illegal structures removed on Orchid road

The Department of Drainage Enforcement and Compliance carried out an enforcement operation on Wednesday to remove shanties and illegal structures that serve as hideouts for criminals on Orchid road in Lekki, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment said.

LAGESC shuts Idera market

The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, on Wednesday, shut Idera market at Oshodi indefinitely for contravening environmental laws. ‘‘Our operatives stationed across the Oshodi division during routine market monitoring identified the filth, unhygienic practices and indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the Idera Market area which prompted us to seal off the market until further notice,” LAGESC chief, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole said.

Ikeja NBA creates platform to tackle corruption

The Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has launched a platform to tackle the inefficiencies of court activities and proceedings. The new platform, i-witness, is expected to help track corruption in the judiciary and track late or non-appearance of judges, the Niche reported.

Teacher brutalises three-year-old pupil in Ikorodu

A staff of Christ Mitots School, Isawo road in Ikorodu, Stella Nwadigo has been arrested after she was filmed physically assaulting her three year old pupil in class. FIJ reported that Nwadigo was arrested by the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC) after she was filmed repeatedly hitting the child during her number writing lessons. The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Nwadigo had been transferred to the Police Command.

Two injured as bus crashes into culvert in Lagos

Two persons have been injured after a commercial bus rammed into a culvert in front of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) headquarters office in Oshodi. According to a LASTMA statement, the bus had a brake failure before it crashed into the culvert.

Tension in Mile 2 over cult clash

Residents of Mile 2 are expressing concerns about their safety following the death of three persons in a cult clash which lasted for about three days. According to The Guardian Newspaper, the unrest began during an annual carnival in the area, when a fight broke out among Eiye, Aye and Buccaneer cult members.
