GRV faults Obasa’s claim
The Labour party’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has condemned former speaker, Mudashiru Obasa for storming into the House of Assembly premises on Thursday and declaring himself Speaker. Hon. Obasa has been impeached by his colleagues but insists due process was not followed. Rhodes-Vivour described the move as dangerous to democracy and the peace of Lagos during an interview with Arise News on Friday. “We can not destroy our democratic values and principles for the ambition of one man,” he said.
State House of Assembly orders staff to work from home
The state’s House of Assembly has given directives to all staff members and legislative aides to work from home until further notice due to the ongoing leadership crisis in the legislative arm, Punch Newspaper reported. The directive, which aims to protect staff and prevent potential violence, was issued on Sunday by the acting clerk of the Assembly, Babatunde Abubakar, in a memo titled “Amendment to Remote Work Schedule Arrangement”.
Ikeja military cantonment renamed after Lagbaja
The Nigerian Army has renamed the Ikeja Military Cantonment in honor of former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu extolled the late general as one of Nigeria’s exceptional military officers. “By naming it after Lieutenant General Lagbaja, we pay tribute to a leader whose life exemplified courage, discipline and patriotism,” he said.
Lagos to collaborate with NCC
Governor Sanwo-Olu has announced that the state government is ready to partner with the Nigerian Communications Commission to promote digital progress for Lagosians. He made this announcement on Friday, on his official X page. He said that the state is ready to establish a strong relationship with the commission’s regulatory body. Sanwo-Olu also received a courtesy visit from the Junior Chamber International , led by the President, Oluwatoyin Atanda, at the state’s house in Ikeja on Saturday.
Food prices drop significantly
Foodstuff traders and consumers are excited about the recent drop in prices. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, traders and consumers at various locations in Lagos said food prices such as rice, beans and garri have reduced significantly. While the reason for the price drop remains unclear, they hope it doesn’t increase again.
Land use charge bills released
The state government has released the 2025 Land Use Charge bills. The government also offered a 15% discount for landowners who pay within 30 days of receiving their bill, Nairametrics reported. Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Abayomi Oluyemi, urged property owners to take advantage of the 15% discount by making payments early. He also emphasized that LUC billing is a vital revenue stream that helps the maintenance and improvement of public infrastructure, which includes roads, healthcare, schools, and security.
Portland Gas seeks funds for CNG expansion
Portland Gashas called on the federal and state government to support the expansion of its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure in Lagos. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Folajimi Mohammed highlighted the need for financial assistance due to the high startup and maintenance cost of the business. Representing the Governor at the company’s launch, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Abimbola Akinajo, said the state government was dedicated to sustainable transportation.
Ramadan: Sanwo-Olu preaches unity and compassion
Governor Sanwo-Olu has urged muslims to be compassionate with one another during the fasting period which began on February 28, and will end on March 30. He mentioned this on his official X page describing Ramadan as a sacred month and a time for deep reflection. Meanwhile, the state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat has admonished parents to guide their children in the right path to promote the understanding of humanity and its values. He said this on Sunday during the Annual Ramadan Lecture of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Council.
LASODA marks World wheelchair day
In a bid to restate the state’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and improving the quality of life for individuals living with disabilities, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), marked World Wheelchair day, by donating manual wheelchairs to persons with physical disabilities. LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal thanked the Lagos State Ministry of Health for its support in making the event possible.
DSVA sensitizes Lagos-Island East LGA
The Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), has held an awareness and sensitization programme at the Community Development Committee meeting for residents of Lagos Island East Local Government Area. Ms. Opemipo Ogunse, who represented the agency, educated the participants on different forms of abuse, available reporting mechanisms, as well as support channels provided by the DSVA. Ogunse urged all participants to report any incident of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) cases through a toll-free line.
