Elevator investigation
Probe: The Lagos state government has launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Dr. Vwaere Diaso after outrage on social media. Dr Diaso, who was about to complete her medical housemanship and was on her way to become a full-fledged medical doctor, died from injuries she survived in an elevator crash inside the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island on Tuesday.
Steps taken: According to a government spokesperson, a panel of representatives from the state health services and medical associations have been set up to probe the issue. The elevator installer has also been handed to the police. The panel was given 48 hours to conclude its investigation and submit a report of initial findings on Saturday.
Too little, too late: For many people, Dr. Diaso’s death represented the manner in which human safety is not preemptively prioritised in many parts of Nigerian life. There were allegations that staff had previously complained about the decrepit state of the elevator before the unfortunate incident.
Lawmakers grumble
Not happy: Some lawmakers at the Lagos State House of Assembly have criticised the list of cabinet nominees forwarded by the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for legislative approval. According to them, the list is not representative of all the constituencies that make up Lagos, and does not account for those who worked for the APC during the last elections.
Quotable: “It seems like we have not learnt our lesson, the member representing Badagry Constituency 2, David Setonji, said. “In one of the wards in my constituency, it was hard but in the end we proved ourselves and here is the list and not a single name from my LGA.”
What next: The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, has appealed to the lawmakers as not all local government areas can produce commissioners. “The law gives room for the Governor to decide who he wants to choose, while the House also has the power to deliberate on his decisions,” Obasa said. The House has set up a committee, chaired by the Chief Whip, Fatai Mojeed, to screen the nominees and report back.

Free rides: The Ojodu LCDA announced that it was providing buses to ease transportation worries amid the hike in fuel prices. But when The Record probed deeper, unanswered questions surfaced.
Lucky break: An aircraft crash-landed on a busy street in Oba Akran. Fortunately there were no casualties as citizens and emergency services rushed to quench the ensuing fire.
Flood control: The state government announced a traffic diversion at the Kataguwa/Ilepo axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for the construction of culverts.
Palliatives: Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a 50 percent reduction in the fares charged by all state-owned transport services, The Cable reported.
Health watch: The state government said it confiscated and destroyed six animals discovered to have been infected with the anthrax disease in Lagos Island and Agege, The Punch reported.
