Tinubu backs Obasa’s removal, Meranda to step down for power balance
President Bola Tinubu has backed the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, securing a soft landing for him through resignation instead of outright removal, ThisDay Newspaper reported. After meetings with APC leaders, including Bisi Akande, Olusegun Osoba, and Dele Alake, Tinubu acknowledged that Obasa had lost the support of his colleagues, with 37 out of 39 lawmakers opposing him. The talks also addressed the fate of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who is expected to step down to balance power among Lagos’s three senatorial districts.
Commuters struggle with BRT delays, rising fares
Lagos commuters face long wait times and rising fares on BRT buses, with many spending up to an hour in queues due to limited buses. While some routes have more buses, others, like Ayobo, struggle with shortages, forcing commuters to seek alternatives, The Record reported. Fares have also increased, with LAMATA citing rising operational costs. The government, however, denies a bus shortage, attributing the long queues to Lagos’ growing population. Officials say efforts are underway to expand fleets and improve alternative transport options, including ferries and trains, while maintaining subsidies to keep fares lower than private transport.
LAWMA to introduce 100 CNG waste compactors
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is upgrading its waste collection system with 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) compactors. Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the initiative, which will double next year, aims to modernize Lagos’ waste fleet within five years. LAWMA is also partnering with LAMATA and Zoomlion to enhance waste processing and biogas production, Gazette reported.
