Sanwo-Olu cancels remote work for civil servants

The State Head of Service, Bode Agoro announced that the governor has approved the cancellation of the work-from-home initiative, which allowed civil service workers to work remotely. Introduced in February 2024 to support workers amid the economic hardship caused by the petrol subsidy removal and will end on March 31, 2025, the initiative will now end on March 31, 2025, according to a news report by Vanguard.

Fresh food hub set to reopen on February 12

The Lagos State Government has announced that the Fresh Food Hub will reopen on February 12, 2025, after being closed for the festive season on December 28, 2024. The move will restore access to fresh produce and essential food items for residents, helping meet growing demand in the city.

NRC optimistic about Minna-Lagos train service launch

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) is hopeful that train services between Minna and Lagos will begin in the coming months. The Managing Director Kayode Opeifa highlighted the alignment of the project with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which supports initiatives that reduce the cost of goods, Punch reported. He assured that the NRC would aid logistics and supply chain processes, including assisting businesses like Niger Foods.

Wahab clarifies sachet water not banned, introduces buyback plan

Lagos Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab has assured residents that sachet water is not included in the single-use plastics (SUPs) ban but will be part of a buyback initiative. Speaking after a closed-door meeting with Food and Beverages Recyclers Alliance (FBRA) executives and stakeholders in Alausa, Ikeja, Wahab said the state is finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LAFARGE for a recycling initiative. He also noted that major supermarkets have begun selling plastic bags to discourage indiscriminate disposal, Vanguard reported.

House calls for expanded Detty December celebration

The House of Assembly members have urged Sanwo-Olu to expand Detty December festivities, citing its economic benefits. Speaker Mojisola Meranda called for better traffic management and local government involvement, while Desmond Elliot (Surulere 1) noted the 2024 celebrations generated $71.6 million, Vanguard reported.

Sanwo-Olu inaugurates 2024/25 Ibile Ambassadors

Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the 2024/25 Ibile Youth Ambassadors at the State House on Tuesday. The ambassadors include Obadare Adenekan (State Youth), Faizah Adediran (Ikeja), Bukola Aladesulu (Badagry), Dolapo Oshikoya (Ikorodu), Mohammed Sheriff (Lagos), and Divine Favour Apata (Epe). Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of youth engagement in governance, while the Commissioner for Youth, Mobolaji Ogunlende, urged the ambassadors to uphold leadership values.

State research trust fund bill scales second reading

A bill for the creation of a State Research Trust Fund scaled its second reading on the floor of the House. Sponsored by Gbolahan Yishawu, the bill aims to support scientific and technological development, PM News reported. He mentioned that, as Nigeria’s economic hub, Lagos cannot afford to lag in scientific and technological progress.

Major roads to be closed for Access bank Lagos city marathon

A partial road closure of major roads in Lagos is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025, for the 10th Edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Tuesday, who also mentioned that traffic management officials will be deployed to minimize disruptions. The marathon route will affect areas including Ikorodu Road, Third Mainland Bridge, and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, to accommodate the marathon’s route from the National Stadium in Surulere, extending to Eko Atlantic.

UNICEF and Airtel Nigeria launch digital learning program at School in Maryland

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with Airtel Nigeria, has introduced a digital learning program that offers both online and offline learning. The program was launched at St Agnes Primary School in Maryland, with Celine Lafoucriere, Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office in attendance, the Guardian reported. “This initiative ensures that children who would otherwise be excluded from digital learning can now access quality education,” Lafoucriere said.
