Obasa re-elected as Speaker of Lagos Assembly
Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was re-elected as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly during Monday’s plenary at Alausa. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, who had served as Speaker after Obasa’s impeachment in February, stepped down and was elected Deputy Speaker. Hon. Adewale Temitope retained his role as Majority Leader. Lawmakers praised Meranda’s leadership, expressing confidence in her ability to strengthen the Assembly’s legislative agenda. In his acceptance speech, Obasa thanked lawmakers and staff for their support and said he was committed to serving Lagosians.
Shehu Sani condemns crisis in Lagos Assembly
Meanwhile, former senator Shehu Sani has criticized the ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling it a deviation from the state’s reputation as the “Centre of Excellence.” His reaction follows the reinstatement of Obasa as Speaker after Meranda resigned under political pressure, Sahara Reporters reported.
Jandor dumps PDP, cites betrayal by party leaders
AbdulAzeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing internal sabotage during the 2023 Lagos governorship election. Speaking at a press conference in Ikeja on Monday, he said party leaders conspired to ensure his defeat, with some openly supporting the opposition, The Tribune Online Newspaper reported. He recalled Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat’s post-election remarks confirming that PDP leaders worked against their own candidates. Jandor said he and his supporters are yet to decide on their next political move.
Lagos Govt addresses overcrowding on Oshodi pedestrian bridge
The Lagos State Government has assured commuters that measures are being taken to ease overcrowding on the alternative pedestrian bridge in Oshodi. The congestion followed the January closure of the main bridge due to safety concerns. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, acknowledged the challenges and confirmed that authorities are working to provide additional pedestrian bridges in the area. He urged residents to continue obeying the “No Crossing of Highway” law while the government finds a lasting solution, The Nation Newspaper reported.
Sanwo-Olu calls for stronger ECOWAS integration
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to remove trade barriers and strengthen institutions for free movement across West Africa. Speaking at a parliamentary seminar in Lagos, he emphasized the need for proactive solutions to climate change and regional disintegration, Radio Nigeria reported. “We must build a West Africa where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” he said.
Hi-Tech Construction to train residents affected by Lagos-Calabar road project
Hi-Tech Construction will train 60 residents affected by the Lagos-Calabar Coastal road project in vocational skills. “Giving back to communities impacted by major projects is a necessity,” said the company’s community relations manager, David Omaghomi. The training, scheduled for March 8, will cover skills like solar power, masonry, digital marketing, and fashion design, BusinessDay reported.
FG looking for Lagos Airport refurbishment funding, says Keyamo
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the federal government is considering funding options to refurbish theMurtala Muhammed International Airport. Addressing reports that misrepresented his remarks at a recent stakeholders’ forum, Keyamo said that while funding is being sourced, concession plans remain on the table for efficient management, The Cable Newspaper reported. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency in the airport concession process and the development of a master plan for major airports.
Ikeja Electric restores electricity in Epe after vandalism
Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) has restored electricity in Epe after replacing vandalized sections of the Agbowa feeder. The Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye urged communities to protect power infrastructure. “Vandalism disrupts lives and economic activities,” he said. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Abiola Kosegbe warned that under the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, offences like energy theft and meter bypass carry legal penalties, Nairametrics reported.
FAAN shuts Lagos Airport runway for repairs again
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has temporarily closed Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed International Airport for rehabilitation on March 3 and 4, just weeks after reopening it from an 11-month shutdown. FAAN’s Head of Operations, J.U. Nwosu, cited safety concerns over construction equipment at the A2 Taxiway-link, BusinessDay reported. During the closure, all flights will use the shorter domestic runway, 18L/36R, potentially causing delays. FAAN assured passengers that alternative taxiways are operational and urged cooperation as it works to enhance airport safety.
PalmPay opens customer experience centre in Ikeja
PalmPay has launched a customer experience centre in Opebi, Ikeja, to enhance real-time support and user engagement. At the opening event, Managing Director Chika Nwosu reaffirmed the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction. “This centre reflects our dedication to providing more support, convenience, and innovation,” Nwosu said. The facility will offer in-person assistance alongside PalmPay’s existing multi-channel support, ThisDay Newspaper reported. The fintech firm also plans to open more centres across Nigeria to strengthen its service delivery.
