The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Friday declared a nationwide strike beginning from Monday, June 3, 2024, over the inability to agree, with the federal government, on a new minimum wage and hike in electricity tariff.
The strike is expected to affect Lagos, the country’s commercial capital.
The unions had rejected the federal government’s offer of a N60,000 minimum wage instead proposing a N615,000 minimum wage.
In a press briefing, TUC Chairman, Comrade Festus Osifo, said the unions were calling on the federal government to be more responsive to the plight of the Nigerian worker.
“We are calling on them, that the hardship we are currently facing is as a result of the policies that were brought about by this government, that we felt were not well thought out,” he said.

“And what has fed into this, as well know, it’s quite obvious, is the removal of fuel subsidy, the flotation of the naira, and electricity price hike.
“So gentlemen of the Press, if you could remember, we had a meeting, a national executive council meeting of the NLC and the TUC where we were further charged that the leadership should take charge and take all actions to call government to order at the end of the expiration of the ultimatum.
“Today is 31st of May, 2024, and this night the ultimatum expires. So gentlemen of the press, we are hereby declaring the commencement of a nationwide industrial strike, effective from Monday June 3rd, 2024, and this strike shall be indefinite, and shall be on until we have a new national minimum wage, until government is serious, and until the tariff increment in electricity is reversed.”
