A recent study has revealed that Makoko and Iwaya rank among the poorest communities in Lagos, with severe levels of deprivation across key indicators such as education, sanitation, and healthcare.
Using a multidimensional approach to measure poverty, the study found that these coastal slums suffer from the highest poverty levels, with both communities exceeding the threshold for severe deprivation.
Makoko, in particular, faces significant challenges due to its vulnerable location along the coast, where makeshift housing and poor infrastructure contribute to its dire conditions.
