The state’s waste management authority, LAWMA, has heightened enforcement actions across the state, leading to the sealing of Ile-Iyan, a restaurant in Sabo, Yaba, for illegal waste disposal practices. This move follows a recent crackdown on cart pushers and other businesses violating environmental regulations in areas like Ejigbo, Isolo, and Somolu.
Why it matters: LAWMA’s actions underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment. By holding businesses accountable for waste management and targeting illegal cart pushers, LAWMA aims to ensure that all sectors comply with environmental standards, which is crucial for public health and urban cleanliness.
Go deeper: LAWMA’s chief, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that the closure of Ile-Iyan was prompted by the discovery of its waste being dumped illegally near Aje Comprehensive High School in Sabo. Despite claims of registration with LAWMA, the restaurant failed to provide evidence of compliance, prompting the closure. Over the weekend, the state environmental protection agency, LASEPA, also sealed off a branch of Ile-Iyan on Isaac John Street, GRA Ikeja, for noise pollution following complaints from local residents and neighbors.
Quote: “Every business operating in Lagos must be registered with LAWMA and comply with approved waste management guidelines. Defaulters will face strict penalties, including the sealing of their premises,” Dr. Gbadegesin said.
