LASBCA evacuates residents from distressed buildings in Surulere, Apapa

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has evacuated residents from structurally unsafe buildings at Surulere, and Apapa.

The evacuation is part of LASBCA’s intensified efforts to prevent loss of lives and property due to unsafe structures. Lagos has a history of building collapses, and addressing distressed properties is key to improving safety standards.

A video shared on LASBCA’s official X (formerly Twitter) account showed alarming cracks and exposed reinforcement rods on a residential storey building. The footage also captured a LASBCA official tugging on a two-storey structure, causing cement to crumble easily. Photos revealed further evidence of structural distress, including detached windows and unauthorized building alterations.

“Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) evacuate occupants from distressed buildings at No. 28 and 20 Ramlat Timson Street, Coker Aguda, Surulere, and on Oloko Dana Street, Abule Nla, Apapa, Lagos State,” the tweet read.
