Lagos moves to digitise interstate travel

The state government has unveiled an interstate park accreditation and passenger manifest digitisation project.

At the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, on Friday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, laid emphasis on the significance of a new initiative focused on improving safety and comfort for road travelers entering or leaving Lagos state.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, the project is aimed at ensuring the safety and comfort of every traveller who enters or exits Lagos by road. All interstate parks in Lagos are now expected to undergo an accreditation process, while the paper-based manifest system is being digitalised, enabling the real-time capture and secure storage of passenger data.

Osiyemi spoke about the project’s key goals, which is standardizing interstate parks across the state and digitizing the passenger manifest system to enhance efficiency and accuracy. He explained that the initiative has two main key functions which is: Interstate Park Accreditation and the Digital Passenger Manifest System, which are designed to streamline operations and elevate travel standards in Lagos.

“These accredited parks will display distinctive signage, reassuring travellers that they are boarding from a secure and regulated facility. Unregulated, roadside “mushroom” parks will be required to meet specific standards or make necessary improvements to operate,” he said.

The Commissioner added that the Digital Passenger Manifest System will replace the traditional paper-based records with a secure, digital platform for real-time passenger data capture and storage. He also said that, this advancement ensures instant access to accurate passenger information in case of emergencies, enabling responders to act swiftly with essential details.

Osiyemi announced that established interstate parks will integrate with Lagos State’s centralized transport platform, boosting traveler confidence and credibility for park operators.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa highlighted the need for improved park management, reassuring the public of data privacy under current laws.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Touch and Pay (TAP) Technologies, Olamide Afolabi explained that agents will verify passenger data digitally at accredited parks, linking it with vehicle and driver details. This process, he said, will phase out unregulated parks, reducing risks to the public’s safety.

The State Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Usman Teslim praised the collaboration that enabled the shift from analogue to digital, crediting the Ministry of Transportation, consulting teams, and the Union for this advancement.
