Lagos officially gains full regulatory control over electricity market

The Lagos State Government has officially gained full regulatory control over its electricity market, becoming one of the few states in Nigeria to do so, BusinessDay reported. The move aligns with the Electricity Act 2023 and the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

LASIEC reaffirms readiness for LG elections

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has reaffirmed its commitment and readiness for the 2025 Local Government elections, the News Agency of Nigeria reported. The Commission’s Chairman, retired Justice Bola Ighile, said an orientation program would be held to educate relocated residents on the voting process. He also urged those who have not registered for their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to register.

Nigeria bids to host global climate summit in Lagos

Nigeria plans to host COP 32, a global climate summit, in Lagos, Climate Home News reported. Officials from the Federal Ministry of Environment recently met with UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiel, to discuss the country’s bid. “If Azerbaijan can host COP in Baku, why can’t Nigeria do it in Lagos?” Lagos state commissioner for environment Tokunbo Wahab said.

Democracy died after Obasa’s re-election – Gen. Olanrewaju

Former Minister of Communication, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju, has criticised the recent reinstatement of the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa. “The ruling elites don’t seem to accommodate the indigenes in the governance of the state,” the General said. “The dropping of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the speaker left a sour taste in the mouths of the state’s indigenous citizens.” 

Sanwo-Olu completes rehabilitation of key roads in Ketu axis

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has completed the rehabilitation of three major roads in the Ketu axis: Demurin Road, Agidi Road, and Church Street. These roads had deteriorated due to increased socio-economic activities, leading to frequent flooding and traffic congestion. During an address to residents’ associations and Community Development Associations, the governor urged the community to take responsibility for the roads’ maintenance. “This road is now your collective responsibility to maintain and protect as a vital asset for the community,” he said.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, has been honored as an honorary executive member of the Society for Notaries Public. Chief (Mrs.) Marlies Allan, leading the Society of Notaries Public, presented the honor during a visit to the Ministry of Justice at the Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja.. 

Sanwo-Olu vows to invest in infrastructure to boost state economy

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised to invest in critical infrastructure to boost the state’s economic prosperity, The Sun reported. He also urged residents to take ownership of government facilities, stressing the importance of using them properly and protecting them from vandalism. Additionally, he encouraged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

Police nab Pakistani gang of kidnappers in Ikeja

The police arrested two suspects of Pakistani descent, aged 19 and 28, in Ikeja for allegedly kidnapping a 48-year-old Pakistani man. The victim, who had been lured from Kano to work as a chef, was abducted by the suspects, who demanded ransom from his boss. Five other Pakistani suspects managed to escape, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

DSVA to host international women’s day event

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC), is hosting an International Women’s Day event today. The event will feature speakers addressing topics of reflection and empowerment, with a focus on promoting gender equality and raising awareness about sexual and domestic violence.

Sports award set to take place today in Surulere

The Newstap/SWAN Five Star Sports Award will take place today at the Bamboo Hall of the prestigious Eko Club, located off Bode Thomas Street, Surulere, Lagos. The event aims to honor sports stakeholders for their significant contributions to the development of Nigerian sports, ThisDay reported.
