Lagos Assembly questions Sanwo-Olu’s appointments

The Lagos State House of Assembly has queried the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration for making executive appointments without screening by the legislative body.

In a release, the house said some appointees including the head of service and the accountant-general have not been confirmed by the assembly and should be suspended pending when they appear before the house.

“Section 198 states that chairman and members of any of the bodies so established shall, subject to the provisions of this Constitution, be appointed by Governor of the State and the appointment shall be subject to confirmation by a resolution of the house of assembly of the state,” deputy majority leader, Noheem Adams said, according to the release.

Lagos Muslims to pay 3.2 million for 2023 Hajj pilgrimage

The Lagos state government has approved the sum of N3.2 million as the total fare to be paid by intending pilgrims for the 2023 Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia through the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board.

The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi, disclosed this at a meeting held with the intending pilgrims and other stakeholders at the Shamsi Adisa Thomas mosque in Ikeja GRA.

The sum, which covers hotel accommodation, flight tickets and basic travel allowance, was recommended by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Elegushi said.

Contemporary folk and roots musician, Segun Akinlolu, better known as Beautiful Nubia, has announced a live concert in Ikeja GRA to commemorate his latest album, Olumuyiwa.

Tickets are being sold for between N3,000 to N5,000.

A seven-storey building collapsed on Wednesday in Banana Island, Ikoyi.

In a statement, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said some workers were trapped. Meanwhile, the Lagos state ministry of physical planning and urban development said a few people sustained injuries and no fatalities were recorded.

A former deputy governor of Lagos state, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, has alleged that her life is in danger for not supporting the presidential ambition of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“I have viewed it that, if Bola Tinubu wins the presidential election, I have threatened to renounce my citizenship of Nigeria,” Ojikutu told journalists in her Ikoyi home on Wednesday.

Ojikutu served as deputy governor in Lagos under Michael Otedola between 1992 to 1993.

Lagosians not happy with portrayal of Eyo in Gangs of Lagos, says Chief

The Akinsiku of Lagos, Chief Adebola Dosunmu, has faulted the portrayal of Eyo masquerade in the Amazon Prime film, Gangs of Lagos.

In a viral video, the chief said Eyo is not meant for movies or parties. “Lagosians are not happy with that movie, and we’re not going to take it and it’s unacceptable for our tradition and for our heritage,” he said.

Meanwhile, a group called the Isale Eko Descendants’ Union (IDU) have petitioned the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) over alleged defamation of their community and Eyo masquerade in the Gangs of Lagos film.

Two die in bus, trailer collision on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

At least two persons died on Wednesday after a commercial bus driving against traffic rammed into a trailer on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Punch reported.

According to the newspaper, the bus, coming from Lagos inward Ogun State split into two after colliding with the trailer, killing several passengers on board.

When contacted, the Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander, Mr Babatunde Farinloye, confirmed the incident and told the newspaper, “two people died and 14 persons were injured.”

FG approves N6.28bn for maintenance of Third Mainland Bridge

The federal government on Wednesday approved N6.28 billion for surface maintenance of the Third Mainland Bridge.

Briefing State House correspondents in Abuja after a Federal Executive Council meeting, Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said the 24-month repair will cover 11 kilometres including interchanges, ramps and critical links.

The announcement comes barely two weeks after the Lagos State Government said it would undertake rehabilitation works on the 32-year-old Bridge to repair failed and peeled asphaltic sections and substructure, Punch reported.

Osimhen absent as Napoli lose to Milan in Champions League

Napoli missed their Ikeja-bred, world-class striker, Victor Osimhen on Wednesday as AC Milan took a one-goal lead in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League encounter.

Osimhen has now missed three games with a groin injury since scoring twice in the 4-0 win against Torino in mid-March and Napoli have scored just two goals in those three games, ESPN reported.

Some analysts believe Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti must gamble on Osimhen’s fitness in the second-leg, which will be played next week, if the Serie A leaders are to overturn Wednesday’s defeat.

Marriott Hotel Ikeja wins Sub-Saharan Africa award

Mariott Hotel Ikeja has been named as the best in Sub-Saharan Africa for its excellent guest satisfaction index, gross operating profit and improvement in total sales.

The award was conferred on the hotel by Marriott International at the General managers Conference in Abu Dhabi, a spokesman for the hotel, Mr Muyiwa Akanda, said.

The hotel reportedly outperformed over 90 Marriott International Hotels within the sub-Saharan region to clinch top spot.
