A gas truck discharging its contents into a surface storage tank at a Mobil filling station on Awolowo Road, near Airport Hotel in Ikeja, caught fire earlier today.
The fire, which began around 10:49 AM, engulfed eight vehicles, including the tanker itself, and caused damage to parts of the uppermost floor of a nearby two-storey building.
Emergency responders from the Alausa and Ikeja Fire Stations arrived promptly to combat the flames.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, led by Director Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that several individuals were injured in the incident and have been transported to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment. The exact number of those injured is still being determined.
In addition to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and other agencies were on-site to assist in managing the situation.
The Mobil Fire Unit from Apapa, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABCA), and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) also played critical roles in the emergency response.
The fire has since been brought under control, and the process of dampening down is ongoing.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is committed to safety and well-being of all residents and urges the Public to exercise caution around flammable materials and follow safety guidelines at all times,” Adeseye advised residents of the state.
