Free HIV testing for riverine communities
The Lagos State Aids Control Agency has launched a three-day free HIV testing and counselling programme for residents of 19 riverine communities in the state. Running from January 29 to 31, 2025, the initiative aims to provide confidential and accurate HIV testing, along with professional counselling services, to residents in these areas, particularly fishermen.
Cow prices hit 1.7 million naira as slaughter numbers decline
Cow prices have surged to 1.7 million naira due to the ongoing exchange rate crisis and inflation, according to the Lagos State Butchers Association. As a result, the number of cows slaughtered daily in Lagos State has dropped from 5,000 to 3,000, with further declines expected if prices continue to rise, NAN reports.
Lawmakers freed following protest over detention
Over 20 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly protested at the Department of State Services (DSS) office in Shangisha-Magodo, Lagos, after lawmakers Lanre Afinni, Sylvester Ogunkelu, Abiodun Tobun, and Gbolahon Yishawu were detained. The protest was sparked by the lawmakers’ alleged involvement in the ongoing speakership crisis in the Assembly.
Obalende underbridge clogged as task force fails to return
Miscreants and squatters have occupied the Obalende underbridge, causing the drainage to remain clogged. The Special Environmental Task Force promised to return for further clearing but has not done so in four months, The Guardian reported.
New LASTMA mayor inducted
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has inducted Oluyemi Kalesanwo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), into the esteemed corps of LASTMA Mayors, alongside Mrs. Mobolaji Daba, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Deputy Governor.
Rainoil National tennis open to kick off at Ikoyi Club
The Rainoil National Tennis Open will take place from February 3 to 9, 2025, at the Ikoyi Club Tennis Section. The tournament will feature men’s singles, men’s doubles, ladies singles, and ladies doubles, divided into four groups of four teams, with a total prize purse of N23.49 million. The finals are scheduled for Sunday, February 9.
NSCDC denies involvement in hotel theft by armed men in corps uniform
Fifteen masked armed men dressed in Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) uniforms looted valuables and stole a large generator set from a hotel in Lagos. The men fled to an unknown location after the theft. Among the suspects was a man named Nicholas, a diesel dealer who had allegedly sold fuel worth ₦3 million to the hotel under the previous management but was never paid. In response, Lagos NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Seun Abolurin, denied any involvement of the Corps, stating, “We have no report of such an incident. People impersonate security agencies all the time.” He urged the hotel management to report the case for proper investigation, ThisDay reports
Registration opens for UBE by CAS placement test for primary six pupils in Lagos
The Lagos State government has opened registrations for the Universal Basic Education by Continuous Assessment Scores (UBE by CAS) Placement Test. Primary six pupils in Lagos State are eligible to take the test, which includes Yoruba as one of the subjects to assess pupils’ knowledge and thinking ability. Registration is free for pupils in public primary schools, while those in approved private primary schools must pay ₦5,000 per candidate through the Lagos State Central Billing System. Pupils can register from Monday, January 27, to Friday, April 18, 2025.
