The Lagos State Government has announced significant progress on the second phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line project, with over 30% of the infrastructure completed.
In December 2023, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) Managing Director Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo had stated during a press conference marking the agency’s 20th anniversary that the project would be completed in 2027.
However, in a statement shared on Monday by LAMATA on its official X account, the 14-kilometre stretch is projected to be completed by 2026.
Director of Rail Transport at LAMATA, Mr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga, provided updates during an interview with Channels TV. He revealed that the project involves the construction of three major bridges, including the Satellite Bridge, which is already 75% complete.
The full Lagos Blue Line, spanning 27 kilometres from Okokomaiko to Marina, is powered by an independent power plant (IPP). Its first phase, a 13-kilometre stretch, was commissioned in January 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The contract for the second phase of the line was awarded in 2023 to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
According to LAMATA, it will include six additional stations in Festac, Alakija, Trade Fair, Volkswagen, LASU and Okokomaiko along with three bridges in Maza Maza, Satellite town and LASU, covering a 14-kilometer stretch.
There are also plans to construct a depot in Okokomaiko and discussions are ongoing with the Ogun State government to extend the Blue Line further down to Agbara.
