The mission of The Ikeja Record is to become the most-trusted and most-accurate information resource for people who live or work in Ikeja. That means seeking out the truth and helping people understand the world from an Ikeja perspective is at the heart of everything we do.
We are seeking a co-editor who will play a central role in how The Ikeja Record evolves. The co-editor will work with other co-editors, staff writers, marketers, and freelancers to produce the best journalism out of Ikeja. This is a fantastic job for someone who is passionate about journalism and truth-seeking, is familiar with Ikeja and surrounding communities, and wants to help create a better informed society.
Responsibilities
- Managing the editorial content of The Record. This includes overseeing the writing, editing, and production of news stories, features, opinion pieces, social media copy and other content.
- Assigning stories to reporters and freelance writers based on their interests, expertise, and availability.
- Reviewing and editing copy to ensure it is accurate, grammatically correct, and adheres to The Record’s style guide.
- Writing headlines and captions that accurately reflect the content of an article.
- Working with the advertising department to ensure that advertising content is integrated seamlessly into The Record’s editorial content.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with sources in the community to ensure that The Record has access to the latest news and information.
- Managing The Record’s website and social media accounts to ensure that they are updated regularly with fresh content.
- Attending community events to stay up-to-date with local happenings and to network with sources.
Basic qualifications
- Some experience working in a high-pressure, deadline-driven newsroom or other journalistic setting. This can include working as a reporter, copy editor, or other editorial positions.
- Strong writing and editing skills with a keen eye for detail, grammar, style and that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment.
- Familiarity with community issues in and around Ikeja.
- Familiarity with WordPress’s Content Management System.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with a strong network of freelancers and stringers in and around Ikeja is a plus but not required.
- Familiarity with community issues in and around Ikeja.
- Believes in The Ikeja Record’s mission and values and is dedicated to being a part of our innovation and growth.
- Previous experience directly managing and editing reporters.
The monthly pay for this role is N300,000.
The role is remote.
