There have been reports of blackouts in several parts of Lagos since Monday.

The Egbin Power Plant, one of Nigeria’s largest thermal generating stations in Lagos with an installed capacity of 1,320 MW, disclosed via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday that it was shut down for maintenance on the gas pipeline supplying gas to the plant.

Ikeja Electric PLC also confirmed this on Wednesday via their official X account.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this situation and assure you that normalcy will be restored upon the completion of the maintenance work,” their tweet read.

Peace Popoola, a Meta Campaign manager in the Ketu axis of Lagos, confirmed the blackout to The Record, stating that there had been no light in her area for the past two days.

“Before the blackout, it was epileptic but they still brought it,” Popoola mentioned.

Rachel Uwaje, a Lagos resident in Ogba, expressed inconvenience due to the blackout.

She shared that relying on power banks and laptops for charging phones has become necessary, and the absence of electricity means enduring the heat at night without a fan, making it a challenging experience for her family.

“It’s not even funny anymore. I am also having to buy water from mallams that sell because there’s no way to pump water without light. My landlady has been gracious few times to pump with gen but it’s a struggle. I really cannot wait for whatever issue it is to be resolved,” Uwaje shared with our correspondent.

Lagosians on their X accounts also lamented about the blackout and its widespread impact.

@LadyJMarshal wrote, “Is it just me or there’s no light in the whole of Lagos?”

“There’s no light Nationwide, we don’t know when the light will return and nobody is communicating with us?What sort of country is this?,” @WunmiWonka wrote.

“Is the government aware that there’s no light in the whole city? Is Sanwoolu on seat or they’ve closed for the year?” @seyedele tweeted.

@realjoycekeri wrote, “Wait oh,no light for Lagos ni?? make i dey go back my minna.”
