Dollar-Naira tussle: Govt prosecutor withdraws charges against 19 BDC operators

A prosecutor with the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Mr. Umaru Bello, has withdrawn charges against 19 Bureau de Change (BDC) operators at the Federal High Court, prompting Justice Lewis Alagoa to dismiss the charges.

The court had earlier been told that the 19 BDC Operators contravened provisions of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 2020 and were charged with conspiracy, unlawful operation of forex trading without a licence from regulatory agencies and deriving various sums of money from such unauthorised trading.

The prosecutor, Mr Bello, who announced an appearance for the prosecution suddenly told the court he wants to withdraw the charge against the defendants.

He told the court that he received a call from his superiors in the office to withdraw the case and would not be proceeding with the arraignment of the suspects.
