Workers protest ‘unlawful sack’ of 391 Lagos Water Corporation staff

Members of the Amalgamated Unions of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) on Wednesday protested the Lagos State Government’s dismissal of 391 workers from the Lagos State Water Corporation (LWC).

The protest commenced at Ikeja under-bridge, towards the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa.

“We believe the sack breached Section 20 of the Labour Law,” one of the protesters, who simply gave his name as Gabriel for fear of being victimised, said.

This section mandates employers to notify unions before resorting to layoffs due to redundancy.

The Lagos government, however, has maintained that the dismissals, which occurred in April 2024, were part of a restructuring effort aimed at improving the corporation’s efficiency, The Cable reported.

This is not the first time workers have been dismissed at the corporation. In December 2023, the government also let go of 450 casual workers.
