The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Lagos has called on the state government to increase its 2025 healthcare budget allocation to 15 percent, up from the current 4.5 percent.
The NMA Lagos Chairman on behalf of the association highlighted the strain on the healthcare system, noting that medical practitioners are overworked and underpaid.
The NMA criticised the state’s healthcare infrastructure as overstretched and outdated, with insufficient support for healthcare professionals.
The chairman also argued that the Civil Service Commission (CSC) should not oversee the salary structure for medical workers, given the unique demands of the profession.
“While we recognize that there are competing priorities, health must remain the number one focus,” he emphasised, underscoring the need for increased investment in healthcare.
