Following a recent Ikeja Record report highlighting public concerns over the ₦1,000 access fee at Johnson Jakande Tinubu (JJT) Park, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has responded, defending the fee as necessary for park maintenance.
In a statement addressed to Ikeja Record, LASPARK explained that the fee, introduced in 2024, covers costs for repairs, janitorial services, security, and facility management, ensuring a clean and secure environment for visitors.
This response comes after Ikeja Record reported complaints from park users who expressed surprise at the charge, having enjoyed free access to the same park previously.
Other visitors also questioned the rationale behind the fee, citing concerns about its impact on lower-income residents and the quality of park facilities.
“While we understand the current economic challenges, it is important to note that park visits have actually increased in spite of the entry fee implemented over a year ago, indicating continued public interest. Payments are automated using Lagos State Payer ID,” LASPARK wrote to Ikeja Record.
The agency also highlighted periodic fee waivers, such as those during Workers’ Day in May 2024 and the December 2024 festive season, to enhance public access.
LASPARK further reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue and said it remains open to feedback from the public to improve its services.
