The Lagos State Government is set to leverage satellite technology to track building construction across the state, aiming to enforce compliance with building regulations and curb illegal developments. The initiative will involve capturing real-time satellite images of construction sites to ensure adherence to approved standards and building laws.
Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, the Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, revealed that this monitoring strategy is linked to the Lagos State Geographic Information Service (LAGIS) bill, now under consideration by the Lagos State House of Assembly. Dr. Babatunde explained that the bill is designed to streamline the building approval process and enhance urban planning efforts.
The urgency of this initiative stems from the current statistics, which reveal that fewer than 10 percent of buildings in Lagos hold valid approvals. This gap in regulatory compliance has contributed to challenges in urban planning, including overcrowded areas, substandard building quality, and safety risks for residents. With the new bill, the government hopes to increase transparency in the building approval process and improve safety standards.
If passed, the LAGIS bill will grant authorities access to comprehensive data on construction activities, allowing for swift action against unauthorized projects.
Dr. Babatunde emphasized that this system will make it easier for regulatory agencies to manage building activities and ensure Lagos develops according to its urban plans.
