Lagos moves to reduce maternal mortality

In an effort to reduce maternal mortality and enhance access to emergency healthcare in underserved areas of Lagos, the Ministry of Health has partnered with the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) under the Rural Emergency Services and Maternal Transportation (RESMAT) programme.

Funded by the World Bank, the initiative aims to address healthcare gaps in rural communities that often put maternal and infant health at risk.

Dr. Prosper Ahworegba, NEMSAS team lead, emphasised the importance of RESMAT in improving emergency services and maternal transport, especially in rural areas, to combat the high mortality rates. The programme is designed to establish a sustainable framework for transporting pregnant women and other vulnerable groups in these regions.
