Lagos becomes Africa’s second-largest economy by GDP

Lagos has sealed its status as one of Africa’s top economic powerhouses, with its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reaching $259 billion based on purchasing power parity (PPP). This milestone makes Lagos the second-largest economy on the continent, behind Cairo, Egypt. The announcement was made during the launch of the Lagos Economic Development Update (LEDU) 2025 on Wednesday, Naira Metrics reported. 

Tinubu resolves Assembly crisis, backs Obasa

President Bola Tinubu has settled the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly by endorsing Mudashiru Obasa’s return as the House Speaker, despite his removal in January. The mediation between the lawmakers was held at Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. Previously, Mojisola Meranda resigned as Speaker on March 3, 2025, and was re-elected as Deputy Speaker, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement, Punch Newspaper reported.

NIC faults Onafeko for forcing reinstatement

The National Industrial Court (NIC) has criticized the suspended Clerk of the Lagos Assembly, Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, for resorting to self-help in an attempt to reclaim his position. According to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, O.O. Oniyire, Onafeko allegedly forced his way into the office of the acting Clerk, Taiwo Ottun, and issued press statements claiming reinstatement. NIC ruled that both parties must maintain peace until further hearings, The Nation Newspaper reported.

LAWMA sweeper laments poor pay, seeks government’s intervention

In a viral video on social media, a LAWMA sweeper accused her superiors of exploitation, delayed payments and harsh working conditions. According to Punch Newspaper, she claimed that despite reports of an N85,000 salary increase since August 2024, sweepers still receive N30,000 and are often paid late. She also highlighted the dangerous working conditions, revealing that three of her colleagues died last year due to work related hazards.

Court bans public viewing of Gangs of Lagos

Tafawa Balewa High Court has banned the public viewing and streaming of the controversial movie, Gangs of Lagos, ruling that the movie has misrepresented the cultural heritage of the Eyo Masquerade and the traditions of the Isale-Eko people, The Nation Newspaper reported. Justice Idowu Alakija, delivered the judgment following a suit filed by the Isale Eko Descendants Union against Amazon Web Services and others. The court ordered the defendants to issue an apology to the Isale Eko Descendants Union for the alleged misrepresentation.

Otedola Bridge explosion: Lagos to implement stronger safety measures 

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi said that the State Government has vowed to implement stronger safety measures for the movement of hazardous materials, such as gas and petroleum products, within the state. This move is in response to the gas tanker explosion that occurred on Otedola Bridge on Tuesday. Meanwhile, two unidentified bodies have been recovered following the tanker explosion on Tuesday. The fire destroyed 15 vehicles, four buildings, shops and left four people injured. Authorities are yet to determine the vehicle’s registration number and the make, Business Day Newspaper reported.

Lagos to empower women on financial growth

The State Government is making plans to empower women entrepreneurs on digital and financial growth strategies, Business Day Newspaper reported. Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, revealed this, explaining that the initiative is aimed at strengthening female-led MSMEs and ensuring financial inclusion for women entrepreneurs in the state. 

Residents to prepare for heavy rainfall in 2025

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has warned residents to brace for above-normal rainfall in 2025. He said this at a press conference on Seasonal Climate Prediction & Socio-Economic Implications, where he urged residents in flood-prone areas like Owode, Iwaya, Makoko, and Badia to stay alert and prepare for possible relocation. “While we trust due process, we must always double-check and stay proactive,” he said.

MOT partners with FRSC on road safety

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, has reassured Lagosians that the Ministry of Transportation is  committed to improve road safety. He revealed this on his official X page, following a courtesy visit from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat, and his team.

LSACA urges Lagosians to take preventive measures against HIV/AIDS

The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) has called on residents to remain vigilant in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. The agency’s CEO, Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in tackling the epidemic, and urged Lagosians to practice protected sex, avoid sharing sharp objects, undergo regular HIV testing, and seek medical support when necessary. She further highlighted the LSACA commitment to raising awareness, offering free HIV screening and counseling, and aligning with the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda.
