The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched a large-scale clearance of water hyacinth from Lagos’ inland waterways to ensure smoother and easier transportation.
According to the water agency in a statement issued via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, this move is to also enhance proper safety during the busy yuletide.
The Lagos Area Manager Engineer Sarat Braimah in the statement disclosed that this operation covers Omu Creek, and the Lekki and Ikorodu water channels, with plans to extend the project to Badagry and Apapa.
“It’s an expensive project and very demanding, but we are equal to the task as our staff are out there daily to ensure we deliver,” she said.
