Ikeja, Lagos, December 23, 2024 – Ikeja Record is pleased to announce Rejoice Ewodage as the winner of the inaugural Ikeja Record Community Award.
Ms. Ewodage, a multimedia journalist with over a decade of reporting experience, impressed the judges with her compelling pitch titled, “Magboro’s Struggle: A Community in Need of Infrastructure Reforms.”
Her pitch sheds light on the significant challenges faced by the people of Magboro, a border community plagued by inadequate infrastructure and lack of access to basic amenities. The entry captured the community’s resilience while highlighting the urgent need for government action to address the neglect and improve the living conditions of its residents.
The judges, Festus Iyorah and Njideka Agbo, commended Ms. Ewodage’s pitch for its depth and impact:
“We chose this pitch as the winning entry because it is well-detailed, showing the community travails, the lack of access to basic amenities that keep a community thriving, and the wanton neglect from the government responsible for developing Magboro.
“We also looked at the short and long-term impact this report would have on the residents of Magboro; and how the piece would further advocate for better infrastructural development in the community.
“We believe the purpose of this award is to elevate community reporting, which is slowly becoming underreported, and there is no better entry to start with than this entry seeking to humanize the struggles of hundreds of people (if not thousands) hopeful of a better community equipped with basic amenities such as good roads and constant electricity.”
The Ikeja Record Community Award celebrates excellence in community reporting and seeks to amplify underreported stories that inspire change and advocate for development.
For its inaugural edition, the Ikeja Record Community Award received over a dozen pitches from talented journalists eager to tell impactful stories.
