The environmental sanitation corps, popularly known as KAI, on Thursday said it has demolished 138 shanties and dislodged 169 illegal residents at the Ajao Estate canal bank.
‘‘Our intelligence sources identified the humongous infractions across the Ajao Estate Canal banks stretching several metres where people were living illegally in shanties and paid rents between N60,000 to N100,000 to a particular syndicate and this made us activate our enforcement teams for a total dislodgement,” the agency’s chief, Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole said.
He urged Lagos residents to refrain from supporting unauthorized public encampments, warning that numerous violations would be identified and demolition activities would soon commence.
Cole expressed concern over the disregard for public health and safety, pointing out the crowded, illegal encampments as breeding grounds for infectious diseases, sexual violence, and various social problems arising from the presence of miscreants in these concealed areas.
