FRSC launch “Ember” campaign to curb reckless driving in Lagos

The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched its 2024 “Ember” months campaign in collaboration with Guinness Nigeria PLC, with the theme “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers.”

Lagos Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr Kehinde Hamzat, while speaking on Tuesday at the launch, pointed out that passengers’ indifference to reckless driving contributes significantly to road traffic crashes. He added that there is usually increase in travels during holiday seasons, which increases road traffic and the risk of accidents.

The campaign includes different engagement activities including town hall meetings, motorcades, and advocacy efforts at transit and rest areas, designed to encourage passengers to speak up and hold drivers accountable for safe behavior, the Guardian reported.

Hamzat disclosed that the Corps Marshal had directed all commands nationwide to actively engage commuters, ensuring they are familiar with safety regulations, report reckless driving, use seatbelts, and support responsible driving.

He urged passengers to avoid distractions and adhere to road safety measures as they were oftentimes the most affected in the event of traffic crashes.

”We must take proactive steps to provide hope, not fear, when using our roads, as the consequences of our actions or inactions will be severe if we fail to address these challenges,” Hamzat said.

Guinness Nigeria PLC representative, Rotimi Odusola, stressed the importance of responsible drinking, particularly the dangers of drinking alcohol while driving. He reiterated Guinness Nigeria’s commitment to raising awareness on safe driving practices in partnership with the FRSC. ”In taking alcohol, we should be responsible in doing so, but if you are going to operate a vehicle, please do not consume at all,” he said.
