The state government has called for bids from independent power producers to set up gas-fired power plants to address the state’s electricity shortfall. This initiative, under the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), aims to generate up to 500MW across four hubs. Lagos requires over 6,000 MW but currently receives less than 2,000 MW from DisCos.
According to a statement reported by Nairametrics, it is stated that the state is facing significant energy challenges caused by rapid urbanization and growing economic activities. There is an urgent need for sustainable energy alternatives, as the national grid is unable to meet the energy demands of the entire country.
The plants will be located near existing DisCos substations, with each hub required to produce a minimum of 100MW. The government is encouraging both companies and consortia with the necessary expertise to apply.
