Residents of Oshodi, Mafoluku, and Ewu-Tuntun staged a protest on Thursday, voicing their frustrations over what they labeled “crazy bills” issued by Ikeja Electric (IE).
With placards in hand and chanting solidarity songs, the protesters marched to Ikeja Electric’s Oshodi business unit in Okota, demanding an end to estimated billing practices and calling for the immediate provision of prepaid meters for accurate billing.
Residents expressed anger over the exorbitant monthly bills they receive despite inconsistent power supply in their areas.
The spokesman for the protesters, Mr Abdul-Rauf Olowora noted that some households in Mafoluku receive bills as high as N150,000 to N200,000 per month, even when electricity is scarcely available.
“We do not want this any more. We are here to tell them that enough is enough. We cannot be staying in darkness and still be paying for darkness,” Olowora said.
Following a meeting with the management of the Ikeja Electric, Mr Babatunde Faleye, the Chairman of the four communities, urged the IE to do something about the demands before it would escalate.
