Building Guild calls for technology to prevent collapses in Lagos

The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) has called on the Lagos State Government to implement advanced technology for monitoring building integrity, aiming to curb the ongoing issue of structural collapses.

According to Mr. Gbolahan Oyelakin, the BCPG Ikeja Cell Coordinator, such technology could play a critical role in tracking the life cycle of buildings, allowing early detection of potential failures.

“Technology can track the life cycle of a building, alerting us when materials are about to fail, which is key to preventing collapses,” Oyelakin said in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria.

He explained that, by monitoring material durability, it is possible to foresee potential risks and take proactive measures. For instance, if a material rated for a 10-year lifespan is compromised, the system could predict when the building may become unsafe.

The BCPG’s recommendation comes amid growing concerns about structural safety in Lagos, where building collapses have led to property damage and loss of life.

The guild believes technological intervention can help identify weak points in construction, reinforcing safety standards and potentially saving lives across the state.
