The deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has warned that climate change could have disastrous consequences for Lagos if the right measures are not taken. “Lagos, with its 180-kilometre shoreline, is particularly vulnerable,” he said. “Today, both Lagos and New York City are sinking.”
Based on one 2070 climate scenario, Lagos is ranked as the 15th most exposed city to flooding in the world. The deputy governor called for a shift in focus over the next 20 to 25 years, saying, “We must prioritise which areas to preserve,” Punch Newspaper reported.
