Cholera outbreak: Lagos Water Corporation commences extensive sampling of water

The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) has initiated a comprehensive water sampling exercise across the state to safeguard public health and ensure access to safe drinking water amid the ongoing cholera outbreak.

In a statement issued via X on Monday, the LWC disclosed that the water sampling exercise which is being carried out alongside quality monitoring campaigns throughout the state is aimed at “identifying potential health risks associated with contamination.”

The corporation encouraged residents to bring water samples from their homes or public spaces for testing by the qualified teams at its headquarters in Ijora.

It also urged the public to refrain from drinking water from “unreliable or untreated sources”, and expressed particular concern over the spread of the disease in Lekki and Victoria Island.

Quoting the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the corporation noted that “the primary cause of the cholera outbreak has been linked to the consumption of contaminated water and inadequate sanitation.”

The LWC reiterated its commitment to providing safe water to all residents and called on them to cooperate with its teams and follow precautionary measures to curb the spread of the disease.

It advised the public to contact its customers’ care lines via 0704 597 3012, 0704 597 3013, 0703 320 7647 and 08053534252 to report concerns regarding water quality.
