The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, to create avenues to cushion the effect of the hardship being faced by the people of the State.
The members gave the charge on Tuesday during plenary monitored by our Correspondent.
Raising the issue under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, member representing Ojo Constituency 1, Olusegun Ege noted that the current hardship being faced in the nation calls for urgent attention.
According to him, “The Local Government should work on giving out palliatives, transportation should be subsidized, and the health sector be carefully looked into because most people cannot even afford to go to the hospitals for medical care.”
On his part, member representing Ifako-Ijaye Constituency 1 Temitope Adewale said “We are at a phase where things are really hard not only for Lagosians but for Nigerians as a whole. The government should put in place measures to provide succor for Nigerians,”
In his remarks, member representing Lagos Mainland 1, Owolabi Ajani urged the government to look beyond palliatives.
In his words, “This current issue is a global one; we should look beyond palliatives because palliatives are just as preliminary items to cushion the effect of the hardship.”
Noting that the Consumer Protection Agency should intensify their service to the people, member representing Lagos Island 1 Omolara Olumegbon said, “The Consumer Protection Agency should be called to order because items cannot just be rising without recourse to what is making it rise.”
In his submission member representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, Oladipupo Ajomale noted that “The rise of the cost of transportation, food items and healthcare needs to be looked into. All hands need to be put on deck to put an end to the hardship.”
Other members who spoke extensively about the hardship being experienced expressed bitterness over the current situation and suggested improvement in agriculture.
Responding to the submissions from Members, the Speaker, Rt. Mudashiru Obasa, advised leaders in the country against inciteful statement, adding that the current hardship could lead to chaos.
“There is no doubt that the challenge before us as representatives of the people is our duty to come together and proffer solution.
“This is not a one-man show. The Governor must summon for a stakeholders meeting which will comprise of the senators and House of Representatives members representing Lagos State, Members of the State House of Assembly and chairmen of the local government areas as well as those in his cabinet to deliberate on the current issues affecting the people of the State in a bid to proffer a relief from the present economic state.”
In another development, the House confirmed the Governor’s nominees for appointments into the Civil Service Commission, Health Management Agency Public Board, and Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency.
