Sanwo-Olu’s election win confirmed

1. Sanwo-Olu’s victory upheld

The appeal court in Lagos has dismissed the suit filed by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdulazeez Adediran popularly known as Jandor against the election of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Record reported. The Governor applauded the ruling saying it validated the notion that Lagosians freely cast their ballots to return him as Governor and Dr Obafemi Hamzat as deputy.

But the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced its intention to review the recent Appeal Court judgment that upheld Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s election victory, The Record reported.

3. Building collapse 

According to the Vanguard, on a tragic Thursday morning, an elderly woman in her 80s lost her life in a devastating incident—the partial collapse of a two-storey building in the Oyingbo area of Lagos.

4. Abolishing street trading 

On Wednesday, the Lagos State Government took action by apprehending street traders who were operating along various locations including Oshodi-Agege Motor Road, Ikeja GRA, and Old Secretariat in Lagos, the Punch reported.

5. Record holders 

Estonian slackliner Jaan Roose, a three-time world champion and Guinness World Records holder, left Lagosians in awe on Thursday, Premium Times reported. Walking on a tightrope from Sterling Towers to Onome rig in Lagos State, Roose showcased his nerves of steel and unmatched skill. With numerous world records to his name, including being the first athlete to execute a double backflip on a slackline, he continues to push the boundaries of his sport. 

Another record holder, Helen Williams, a Lagos wigmaker, was recognised by the Guinness World Records for crafting the world’s longest handmade wig measuring an impressive 351.28 meters (1,152 ft 5 in).

6. Suspended strike

On Thursday, The NLC, TUC and affiliated unions called off the nationwide strike which took effect on Tuesday, November 14, in protest of the brutalisation of NLC president, Joe Ajaero, on 1 November in Owerri, Imo State, The Record reported

7. Reckless driving

Two sweepers of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), 65-year-old Folashade Odufuwa and 60-year-old Ajoke Adefuye, lost their lifes after being struck by a reckless car driver along the Gbagada expressway. The Record reported that this triggered a brief protest by aggrieved Lagosians along the expressway in the early hours of Monday. Similarly, a driver in Ogba, Lagos, was nabbed by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) for causing a fatal accident which resulted in the death of a passerby. 

8. Drive responsibly

Following the death of the two LAWMA sweepers, the Lagos State House of Assembly summoned key government stakeholders such as the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, and the Special Adviser, Sakirudeen Giwa in a bid to curb reckless driving on Lagos roads.

9. Killer driver arraigned

The Punch reported that killer driver, Jerry Ironkwe, a 45-year-old mechanic, responsible for the death of the two LAWMA sweepers has been arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate Court. However, Ironkwe pleaded not guilty, and the presiding judge, Magistrate L.Y. Balogun granted him bail in the sum of N1m with two responsible sureties that could foot the financial obligations. 

The case has been adjourned till December 13, 2023 for Directorate of Public Prosecution’s legal advice. 

10. Beautiful celebration 

Beautiful Nubia, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated folk music artists, will be performing at EMUfest 2023 in Lagos and Ibadan. The Record announced that the multi-city festival, which is now in its 14th year, will first be held in Lagos on Sunday, November 19th at 51 Adekunle Fajuyi Way, GRA Ikeja.
