Sanwo-Olu considering subsidy for Red Line rail fares

The Lagos State Government has hinted it is exploring options to reduce fares on the Red Line rail, aiming to make the service more affordable for residents.

This follows rising concerns over the current pricing structure, with notable figures like Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, raising the issue.

The fare structure for the Red Line is currently divided into two zones. In Zone 2, fares range from N500 for trips like Agbado to Iju, and up to N1000 for longer distances such as Agege to Yaba. Zone 1 fares are also set at N1500 for trips between Ikeja and Oshodi, and N1000 for Agege to Oyingbo. A full trip from Agbado to Oyingbo costs N1500.

Responding to a comment on X (formerly Twitter) about the need for fare subsidies, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, said: “We are reviewing the figures, and if they make sense, why not? Government services are not designed for profit. The focus is on covering essential costs such as maintenance and staff welfare.”
